The 996 C4S started with the MK II cars in 2002.
As for the answer to the original question, it depends on the buyer. It would be hard to pass up a 97 C2S if it's in good shape. The 993 is a beautiful car, and regarded by many to be one of the best 911s ever made. It's the last of the air-cooled cars.
The 996 C4S is also a wonderful car, but it is not viewed as collectable. They were produced in larger numbers, they are water cooled, etc. That being said, the 996 is more civilized, has more modern safety features, it's all wheel drive, and would probably make a better daily driver.
Really, it's all up to your friend's tastes and how he wants to use the car.

993S is a nice desirable car, probably would lose a lot less $ then the 9964S if your planning on selling it down the road.
The 9964S is faster, looks in my opinion are that I love them both but the 993 interior is dated and unless it has a 3 spoke wheel it really turns me off.
The 993S is special I wouldn't drive it everyday. The 9964S is not so special and a great daily driver and occasional track car.

So that's not your car in the Craigslist ad? Arena Red '97 coupe w/ 90K and a lot of work claimed to have been done........seemed spot on to what you bought last month. Even the area where you live, if I remembered from our talking when you bought the other one in '06 or '07. Sorry if I got it wrong.
