I bought it -- I drove it -- I crashed it

No matter what, at $35-40k you are shopping at the top of the 996 quality and options list. I have seen 996 twin turbos go as low as $34k, but they had higher miles (60k+) and less than stellar maintenance histories. Any 997 in that range is probably going to be a bit dodgy as well.
My suggestion: A nice 02/03 C4S and an good extended warranty?
Something like this (its even in Illinois!)?

Just got a call from the adjuster at 21st Century Insurance. She agreed with me that the upgrade valuation that they gave me for the Targa ($250) wasn't enough. After considerable research, and discussions with her manager, they have agreed to total the car for:
$41,485
Now it's time to go car shopping.

Not sure you could expect to have sold your car on the open market for that price. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have.
NOT the best way to get an upgrade but this has really worked out for you!
