From the 959 Registry...
959 Production Numbers / Quantities
Total production numbers for all the cars were somewhat sketchy. According to an article published in Excellence magazine by Ian Kuah, when asked by the factory, they gave these numbers:
- 16 prototype cars (1985)
- 21 "Vorseries" or pre-production cars (1985)
- 106 Comfort models and 7 ROW sport models (1987)
- 149 Comfort models and one ROW sport model (1988)
- 29 Sport models for USA market (1988)
- 8 additional cars built out of spare parts (1992)

Other then the fact that there are a little over 300 or so that makes them rare, but not the most rare Porsche models, these cars have been over shadowed by more modern P Cars such as the new GT2RS as far as performance. I'd rather have a nice 356C and a GT3RS and *still* have money left over then this 959.

959 is a landmark car. I can't recall anybody who didn't want one of these because they were revolutionary in terms of how you think about sports cars. It's why you have awd sports cars. P-cars, lambos, etc. Coupling HP and computer systems is what makes these cars drivable. It was a paradigm shift and to own one would be a privilege and worth every penny that they are asking and more.
That being said, can somebody loan me the money so I can buy it!!???

Did the term "die hard" as in collector come from guys that are tough to kill by their wives? The insurance alone would break most. I hope insurance agents don't scam to get more money from guys claiming a for sale price is what the car is worth so the insurance goes up. Might lead to prices for cars going down though.

Well known local Porschephile John Dixon (see www.tajmagarj.com) in Dayton, OH, has a 959. A few years ago, he loaned it to a media company for a photo shoot and, you guessed it, it was involved in a major wreck while in their possession.. Following a court fight, the wreckage was returned to John and it has now been incorporated into a display at the Taj Magarj.
Prior to the wreck, he would show it at various local Porsche events where it never failed to attract a crowd. If you're a 911 nut, the 959 will forever be on your "when I win the lottery" list.

I absolutely love the 959. Brings back memories from junior high school and thinking about what the hell I'd have to do to get my hands on one of these things. I like it's look and what it was capable of which wasn't met by another road Porsche until several years later.
Oh and on that video game Test Drive II, I would always choose the 959 as my choice of vehicle!
Anyone want to buy that one and make me the primary caretaker?
