I think the covers are a huge improvements. You get real 911 looks at a 996 price.

In my opinion, they actually don't make the car look like a 'real 911'.
It screams "ugly plastic covers that proves I'm embarrassed about my Porsche".
I saw one today at the traffic light and I couldn't help but notice the gaping big 'shroud' over the front of the car.

But anyway I guess this and the IMS are the two biggest things that seem to bother some 996 owners

Already a million threads on this topic - here's the latest with some opinions

Opinions aside to answer the OP's specific Q,

there are 2 Generations of 996 the Mk1 with the "fried egg" type headlights

Mk2 come with the facelift turbo-like headlights:

Hope this helps.

Followed the bread crumbs here

I have the Techart masks and feel it just changes the look of the front to something more updated, not specifically current or retro 911 but just something I find visually appealing.

Truthfully it looks more like the lights on a Bentley GT or the previous E class Benz.

As with all custom work in the end you get what you pay for... so going with poor quality & fitment jobbers is probably not a good idea.
You know like the difference between a eye popping boob job you can't get enough off or something of lesser quality that makes ya think you probably left the stove on...

That said, in the end whatever you do to your ride is purely for your own enjoyment, it'll be easier to find ***** everyone will like (naturally aspired or supercharged) than to get a consensus on what make a P. look better or worse...

OK let's see where things go from here

Cheers!

Sid.

I don't really like the eyelids, but Sid's car is sick. I would love to see it in person.

I think "real" 911 looks are subjective, some might say the last car that looked like a 911 was the 964.

I think the covers just have a tacked on look but some people love em.

Thanks David!

I've got to tell ya pictures don't actually do it justice!
In real live the symphony of proportion, shape, texture and colour (red & aluminum accented interior) are quite amazing... not to mention that sound!

The latest addition to my ride is the 997 Techart GT Street look side-skirts (made to fit the 996 wide-body) from Precision Porsche.
They make the car look more aggressive and wider.

Right now the P. is in the shop getting a Turbo decklid installed (allot more complicated than I thought), when done I'm replacing the top blade with a carbon fiber one from Maxspeed that's 5" wider on either side (also got my exhaust setup and full carbon door sills there).http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com/

I really should stop with all the customizing but there's a sooo much I still want to do....

Somebody stop me before I hurt myself!!!!

Your black cab looks excellent with those lids, I want them.
Thanks Rob!

There are different Techart authorized dealers in every area that's why you can't buy them direct from Techart yourself

I got my Techart headlight masks at the Porsche dealer ($850,-) they also did the paint and install ($250,-) .
A custom shop near my place was going to charge me $600,- more for the same thing...

I know the Techarts sounds expensive but I got some aftermarket ones ($250,-) and quality and fit was terrible... waste of money

If you're thinking of getting some make sure they do not bake them after paint because they'll curl up like curly fries.
Also make sure you get the black flex polyurethane strips below the headlights painted white cause they'll really stand out once you put the white masks on (and not in a good way).

Hope that helps.

Cheers!
