Default woops - 2nd gear redline

Was cruising the other day when I decided to get on it in 2nd gear. Normally I can tell by the sound of the engine, combined with the exhaust note, when to shift before redline, but this time, with the stereo turned up louder than normal, not only did I hit redline, but I stayed there for a few seconds. In fact, I felt the car discontinue accelerating! Is there a fuel cut-off protection of some sorts to protect the crank & cams from spinning into oblivion?

yep, throttle over-rev protection. This is a good over-rev, the other one.... not so good.

Thx redridge. How does one achieve the "other one"? Hold redline for more than "n" seconds?

Be in 4th gear at redline, then drop into 2nd like I did......mechanical overrev

Or, worse yet, go from 6th to 1st......yowzer!!!

I have hit the rev limiter many times on the street and on the track. Sometimes on the track I bang off the limiter for a couple seconds due to gearing on certain straights. No worries.

No doubt, ouch!
When I had the PPI done on my car, I asked for a computer scan to see how many Type 1 and Type 2's there were. Lot's of Type 1's, but (thank goodness) not a single Type 2. This combined with my second gear syncro issue (grinding only when cold when downshifting to second, fine upshifting, and fine up and down when hot) makes me think the car was tracked a bit before I got it, and by someone who wasn't too experienced. But so far so good, not a single problem, 54k, original RMS and IMS, runs strong, and God willing, it will continue to. When I swap the trans I will pop in a new clutch and do the IMS upgrade.

BTW, I dig the color, Doug!

? People have problems with type 1's? Not me. I bought my car with many thousand type 1's, and sold it with many more. Same with the GT3 when I bought it. It happens. The electronics insure that type 1 does not harm the engine.

Same here, and I agree. I started a thread awhile back that showed that there could be some benefit (to the sealed/oil-starved IMS) of high RPMs for the Pcar. It was data collected by Lin Eng if I remember right. But, everything is a theory, there will always be exceptions, so I say don't *****-foot around it like it's made of glass, drive it the way the way it pleases you (without being stupid), and enjoy the Pcar experience! It's what it's about.

+1 for high rpm's are "good" for bearings to film lube (so I have heard)

I'm guilty. Longer than normal tunnel did it in first gear , it got louder and louder and next thing I know , car sorta quit, I knew I hit it and was like OOPS!

So i made a u turn and went through again of course a bit more careful..=)

no worries, the car won't let your bad driving hurt it, unless you decide to remove rev limit with software, eeek.

For reasons that should be obvious, overrev on downshift is called a "money shift."

Just look at it as you did your best to clean up the upper reaches of your cylinder walls.
