Default Best way to get white-faced gauge cluster?

The only thing my car didn't come with that I really wanted, is the white-faced gauge cluster.
What's the best or most quality way to get this?

I found a cluster on ebay from a big P-car dismantler outfit (not a dude hacking up a 'hot' car) for a 6-sp from an '00 that is supposed to work for '00 and '01 cars (996.641.980.26 70C) for $399. Ouch. Fair price? Plus, is it legally possible (or possible at all) to get my millage re-programmed into the unit somehow? It's almost the same millage, lower by about 4k is all (I know, ODO falsifying is a felony or somn).
Or, is there a kit to turn them white that isn't dirt-rock ghetto?

It is possible to have the mileage reprogrammed. I swapped a different gauge cluster into my last car, but before doing so I sent the new cluster along with pictures of my old cluster and an affidavit to Tacoma Speedometer. They were easy to work with and I don't think the fee was anything outrageous (+/-$100). As for the compatibility and fair price questions, I have no idea.

Rip-off!

This is totally a $5 DIY
Here's the steps:
1. Purchase white kiwi liquid rub on shoe polish:

2. Remove gauge cluster
3. Remove shoe polish cap
4. Rub shoe polish sparingly on gauges
5. Let air dry
6. Once dry, give it another pass making sure to get any spots you missed or that look uneven
7. Replace cap on shoe polish
8. Re-install gauge cluster
9. Go to In-N-Out

... Obviously I'm joking, but in all seriousness, I have the black cluster & I really wish I had a blue or red one personally, so I've looked into that too. But for the price there's a lot of other things I'd rather do, like buy a bunch of socks or something.

Lol!! You're crazy!
ODO I can take care of I guess.

So what's a fair price to pay for a white gauge cluster?

How hard to pull the dash and replace the cluster?

Tacoma Speedometer is near me, if you end up there and need a hand with anything... I might be able to offer some help (though about 30-40 miles away, they are on the way to the track )

There is one in Issaquah? Are the white gauges actually silver? The option code says silver gauges.

Yes. My "white" gauges are actually silver. These are a factory option on my car.

Thanks folks, lots of speedo programming info.

These are the gauges I found, but they have black trim not silver. A '99 C4 I was looking at when shopping for cars has the same gauge set, with black.
Are the silver only for >'02 or maybe for late-996/997s?

The ad says this is for a '00 and '01 only. The set for sale in the picture is listed as 996.641.980.26 70C

Can anyone confirm this will work in my '01 C4 6sp coup???

i was in the same boat as you

i got the white stick on ones on ebay and they look just like oem, the only problem is that the indicator lights dont show through as brightly as they did before

took me under 1/2 hour to install and cost less than 30 bucks, most of the install is removing the cluster, putting the decals on the dials takes minutes as they are flexible whereas the oem ones are metal and cannot be bent, i figured i would try this first and if i didnt like it i would buy oem ones, i'm really happy with it and do not plan on replacing them

i am really happy with this mod, its probably the best mod in have done to date

The silver trim rings have nothing to do with the faces. YOu can get the silver trims rings from many sources. I got mine on Ebay for about $77. Colored guage faces are also available from Porsche and from the aftermarket.

Just did search on Ebay for "Porsche 996 rings" and 'Porsche 996 guages." Lots of both the rings (in many colors) and the faces (in many colors).

I'm also in the market for gauges. Looking for red. If you stumble into anything let me know!
