Default Oil pressure issues - white knuckled it all the way home

Almost had a heart attack today on the drive back from home. Several times, the oil pressure dropped all the way to 0, then bounced back to 5. Then the computer flashed "Failure Warning". No change in the car's behaviour or driving while all this is happening of course, but this proceeds to happen about 4 times. I white knuckle it back home, shut her down, then take an oil level measurement (which shows almost full - just one empty bar at the top). Then i check the computer again to see if the message is still there, but this time reads "No error messages present". The car then runs at full oil pressure (all the way at 5) when this fault doesn't happen. Usually it runs with good pressure, but this seemed too high to me...

WTF? This is getting ridiculous. First the RMS, then the coolant, now this. I almost just want this engine to explode so i can take the hit and get this torture over with. As it is, i really can't enjoy the car because of this damocles sword over my head... Sorry just frustrated...

slow down, its not a big deal (unless it was me) most likely the sending unit... do some checking on that, other issues we have seen are oil presure relief springs. not sure how tough a job that is. This is most likely an easy fix (as long as you have oil, which you checked)

I am away for the weekend but wanted to put a quick post up for you

I just had exactly the same problem and it was a bad sending unit. I would start there first.

its on the right side of the engine as you face it, near the top. It has two wires held on by slip connectors. Remove the wires and clean up the electrical contacts and put them back on before you bother replacing the sending unit. or, just ignore the problem like I do. If the pressure leaves suddenly and comes back suddenly, it is the sending unit.

Thank you all for the responses - esp Ed. I'll check that. I posted the original message right after i got home and was a little frustrated. The car runs fine... most likely the sending unit. i'll keep everyone posted...

Same exact problem: 04 C4S: Oil pressure 4 to zero, back to 4, back to zero. "Failure Warning". Care still ran great with no problems. Scared me so much that I had car towed to shop. Sending unit is relatively cheap and is a real common problem on 996s. Even was covered by my Por"ache" Certified Warranty, which usually doesn't cover anything! Just replace it. Its really simple.

Thorin: I just had my sending unit replaced today at Autowerks by Courtney and these things have a short life span from what I'm told. Your not too far away from him - I don't know where you take your car but he's a great guy and the only factory trained guy outside of the two dealers in our area. The part cost me $80 plus 1 hour labour @ $105 bucks and he checked to see if it was a wiring issue or bad contacts first to save me money. They are booking from next Weds from what I overheard from his girls on the counter.
