Default Finally did the garage door hack (slight modification)

I finally got around to the Garage Door Hack.

Great details via Orient Express again LINK (need to be member)

Switch from the nice folks at Suncoat Motorsports, part number 99661311910A05. The inside connectors are switched, while the outer are for the internal switch light. Helps to have a DVM around . . .

Rather than remove my dash horseshoe (and risk cracking the wood veneer) I mounted as shown. Access is really easy, just pull out the ashtray and then remove the two torx screws. If you want the switch to light, just tap into the ashtray light.

Here is the final:

There is a lot of room in the console, so I just wrapped the opener in foam and stuffed it in. Also, since there is not too much metal in that position, the opener range seems to be great.

Just one comment: I am pretty handy, but I have to say the electrical connection plugs and jacks in my 996 are somewhat an IQ test and I think I am failing. Oh well, I have not broken any yet, either

Well done, Jon. Isn't it nice not to have the ugly door opener hanging from you sun visor?

thanks! I used to have it mounted with Velcro down by the fuse panel--pretty easy reach--but this is a lot better!

Nice placement in the unused button holes in the center console.

One note, the higher up in the car you mount the transmitter, the better range. This is why I have my transmitter in the A pillar.

Pulling off the interior A pillar cover is not hard at all, and for the increased range, it is worth it.

I left my homelink module in the space under the Nav/radio. I used the homelink module because I did not want to have to take thing apart to replace a battery. I have good range and all the power I needed was right there. I forgot what switch I use for the switch lighting but is was easy to do too. Just make sure you buy the rolling code homelink.
Great mod.

I did this mod... then my battery died and had to get the xmitter out again. Now I just keep the xmitter in the glovebox.... hardwired power would be better for this mod.

I received this as a gift (for my motorcycle) and decided I'd rather have it in my car. This actually works very well, it's just as seamless, maybe not quite as cool, but it's also battery-free. Flip the High-beams twice - right at your fingertips... et viola!

Flash 2 Pass Website

Probably took me about an hour start to finish - and it's easily reversed.

One of the things I left out of my DIY, was before you button things up, be sure to put in a fresh battery. I am going on over 4 years now on the original battery that I put in back in early 2005.

Yes, batteries in the new transmitters can easily last 5 years. A lot better than the older transmitters I used to have. I will say the center console offers a really easy access if the battery does run out. These are fun little projects--like hardwiring the V1. Not expensive, low risk, etc.

Very nice job, but I still like my Flash2Pass better. No buttons, etc. just flash the headlights twice and the door opens.

I just clipped my remote over the edge of the drivers door storage compartment. The unit is hidden inside and the metal clip barely shows on the outside. I have not had a problem with range. I just lift the storage cover press and shut. I do like the idea of flashing headlights. I will check out the Flash2Pass.

I use this attached to the key - even has a flashlight and range is OK.
