i went with the IIs just cause they're rated a summer tire compound vs. the IIIs which are all-seasons.

No. The IIIs are rated as a "Max Performance Summer tire".

I recently acquired a 2001 996 cab and need to replace the rear Sport Pilots. The front ones are almost new but I am not sure if I should stick to Sport Pilots and get a new pair or opt for Sumi II's all round. It'll probably cost me the same. None of my tires are N rated and from what I have read on this and other forums it doesn't seem to make that much different. This will be a weekend car with maybe track once a year and never on wet. What would you guys suggest ?

you're right. confabulated the falken 912s, which are all season.

but the IIs have a wear rating of 220 vs. the IIIs which are 300. i may be mistaken, but i take that to mean that the IIs are a softer compound.

i think there are different opinions about mixing and matching brands and specs. i opted to keep my PS2s up front (which still have 60% life in them) and replace my rears with IIs.

but if you're tracking, i think getting all 4 the same is probably best. also, 4 IIs only cost around $600 shipped so i would go with that.

I've got PZeros on thr front and Sumitomo IIs on the rear of my '99 C2 Cab, also have larger diameter anti-sways. The car handles much better than stock, flatter cornering with much less pushing up front. The tires, even mixed feel great and very predictable. They feel best with factory recommended high inflation pressures. I will definately buy the Sumitomos next time all around.

I'm probably not the most aggressive driver out there but I'm not afraid to push it occasionally, and I have 8 seasons under my belt roadracing GXSR Superbikes.

I almost pulled the trigger for a new set of Sumi II's just now after reading this thread and the links to the reviews, but I live right on the coast where the roads are wet almost every morning. My '99 C2 is currently on Pilot Sports and needs two rear tires badly (fronts still have 50%+). I read that the Sumi II's aren't too bad in rain, but can anyone confirm or make an alternate suggestion for DD tires for mostly wet roads (no deep water)? I don't track it but I do hit 110+ mph daily. Any advice is appreciated.

Get the Sumi III's. The II's IMHO are crap. I just did a 38 degree downpour kinda weekend at the track and they performed great.

Thanks Bill. This seems to match what I have been reading. Looks like Sumi III's for me. Now to decide if I'll start with 2 in the rear, and keep the Pilots with 50%+ remaining in the front or go for all 4. My wallet is a bit light after some unexpected expenses so saving $300-400 sounds tempting.

I get my Sumi III"s this friday. I also decided to keep the front Pilots for now and see how it handles. Will keep you posted.

Quick update. Got the rear Sumi III's today, grip is great and ride feels much more comfortable but I am not hearing the quietness people have been talking about with these tires. I have had this drone that gets particularly loud between 50mph and 75mph which I thought was causes by the crappy rear tires. Replacing these have had no effect on noise. Is the noise source front Pilots, bearing or what?

Just had a new set of Sumi III put on today. Love the way the car sounds and ride, although, only a few miles on them at this point. I'm very pleased at this point, good value.

Just put the Sumi's III on tonight. Great deal from Tirerack. They are going to a DE at Bluegrass in April. You cannot beat the value for the money! Keep you all posted....

Just got mine as well, my front Contis are still good, but I decided to get all four at the same time. If anybody is interested locally on a set of front Contis 2 (60%) they can have these cheap.

dunno - my IIs are about a month old, have seen both dry weather and rain, good feel, no issues

I suspect if the IIs are crap, then the IIIs are too, and probably their whole line up
