First of all, I have to say that I agree with eDoug. I wave at every Porsche without exception. It's actually gotten me in trouble with the wife..."who was she?!?" she asked sternly. "It was another Porsche, honey."

My best/worst wave story happened when I first bought the car. I was having it inspected per Maryland state law. The mechanic was coming back from the test drive and I watched him waiting to make a left into the garage parking lot where I stood. Driving the other direction is the smokin' hottest blonde I've ever seen behind the wheel of a 997S. She slows down and gives the mechanic the biggest wave and smile and yells out "sweet cab" and he just looks blankly at her and says nothing so she drives off, seemingly in a huff. It was the most painful Porsche moment I've ever had.

Sadly I find this to be true here as well. I have 3 different vintages of Porsches, though I only drive the 996 regularly. When I'm in 80 911, just about all air cooled porsches I pass wave or blink. In 996 that seldom happens wth any other Pcars, especially Boxsters. In 968, the 4 cylinder guys not only wave, but will rolll down their window at stop lights for a quick hello some times

I have been driving a Porsche for 35 years and the habits of drivers have changed. When I bought my first 911, a 67' in 1973, there weren't that many Porsches out there, 356's and 911's. almost everyone flashed their lights when they saw another Porsche. It was quite rare that Porsches did not flash. This was really the way I found it until the 80's. in 1982 I bought a 928, and with the pop-up lights flashing was not really possible, also true for 914's and 924's-944's. So it become less and less common. Remember how many of the 914's and 924-944's were sold. I drove 928's until 2000 when I bought a 996. Tried to flash at other Porsches , but it is rare now that you get a response. Maybe it was the long series of "pop-up headlight" that started the change of habits, but who really knows.

WoW interesting thought. Also the new cars have lights ON all the time, so flashing is a bit harder to see if I am not mistaken.

This is good and I hope it inspires a whole OUTBREAK of Waves and Flashes that will storm the P-cars and once again be what it was and should be!!

If they are looking, I wave, nod, some acknowledgement. Generally I find better response from the older models.

follow up:
in the last couple weeks I have waved at every P-car I have passed on the road in the Pacific NW (between Bellevue and Bothell )... I recieved (1) reply ... and that day I was driving my Suburban ! ! ! .. (it was a early 80's turbo)

I did however go to a great car show and meet many nice drivers and if any of those had of been on the road (not parked) I bet all would have waved... so far... I am striking out

I think you should just ride on two-wheels more often.

Waving is good for YOUR soul. If no one ever responds, don't take it personally.

This was a big issue back when I used to drive BMWs as well. The 2002 guys were the purists and felt there was a big rift with all the new BMW fans. I specifically recall a guy in Roundel saying he refused to acknowledge newer BMW drivers until he felt they showed him the proper respect. I always wondered what they had to do to have gotten his respect! The thing I had to stop doing was waving at Porsche's when I was in my new A4...talk about feeling like a dumbass.
I will say that I quit waving/flashing at 996 drivers when I was in my '88 since they almost never responded. Every once in a while I'd get totally shocked by someone in a 996 who waved or flashed and I'd quickly try to respond.

UPDATE:
OK this is nuts, I have waved at at least 30 cars since my last post. I have NOT waved like a 6 year old waves to the fireman, I have not waved like some over zellous jack ***... just a nice little tip of the hand or even a couple fingers. Many of these happened right along side other 996's, 997's, 993's, 986's and a few older 911's. At least 5 of them were AFTER we had made eye contact while driving next to each other for a few seconds in open road conditions and in traffic. Once was even a nice looking elderly couple in a newer Targa 997 where we were driving side by side, I looked, smiled and gave a very small wave and a smile... she turned away after looking me straight in the eye???

WASHINGTON DRIVERS ARE STUCK UP!!!! - NOT ONCE did I get a return (until yesterday when a guy in a C4 Cab returned the wave) Infact, on several occations when I waved the people looked and then just looked away and never again looked back... One guy was obviously WAY TOOO COOOL (p*ss off)

Man, I have read that this area is "COLD" but I mean to tell you, I would smile and return a wave to ANYONE that initiated a wave, with or without the P-Car "connection"

My 0.02 -
I dont even care about the type of person that would not even return a friendly HELLO from another human being... as far as I am concerned, I will start waving to PRIUS driver before I initiate another P-Car wave...

And that's the end of that!!
Peace All -

+1

"Older" p-cars are usually owned by enthusiasts, thus the wave. "Newer" p-cars seem to be a mix, enthusiasts=wave, non-enthusiast=no wave.

Some of us own Porsche's because we love the vehicle and everything it stands for. When someone finds out how much I paid or how much they cost, I usually get the ; "You could have gotten a vette, gt500, etc." My response, "This was the car I wanted, not those. I've always wanted a Porsche." Some buy p-cars because they are shiny and they heard they are fast. I always wave at p-cars if I see them, no matter what kind it is. Bout 50/50 waves.

This is a good discussion.
In spanish soloporsche.com forum we had a great thread about this.
Not every Porsche owner has the same passion, and there are lots of them who only wanted a nice sport car with a high quality sport look.
Besides, Cayenne owners are not the best to feel Porsche passion.

This is my own way to understand this philosophy

THE PHILOSOPHY
Porsche represents far more than just an unmistakable trade name. It’s maximun exponent is the 911. Porsche is fascination. The 911 not only promises a world of experience. The myth becomes reality. Only then can you feel the power that is unique to Porsche – both active and attractive. The brand thus embodies the epitome of sporty driving and thinking. That is a real philosophy for us, the 911 lovers, pure cPorsche, pure 911. When you've have the chance to see a nine-eleven for the first time, it probably changes your way of thinking about cars. The 911 is not a simply sport car, it's the myth 911. The longing to possess a 911 could become to transform into an obsession, or a 'beautiful' chronic disease... When you are seated at the commands of a 911 and you'd switch the engine on, you'll know that there is something different. It's characteristic flat-six engine sound is telling to us that we are in a real sport car. The '911 personality', is caused by the rear engine configuration. If you want to extract the most from the car, just driving it wouldn't be enough, you'll have to ride it as a pilot. The 911-concept has been enchanting all the Porsche 911 lovers far more than 40 years, and it's really alive more than never been thought before. Its uncomparable silhouette is another one of the 911 concept's elements. There are no similitudes to any other sporty car. 911 owners don't enjoy just driving it. They have fun contemplating the car after parked indeed. In fact we are talking about a mental sickness... a chronic desease. Imagine a sunny Sunday morning, an unfrequented road mountain, both the 911 and you... It's harmony, pleasure, symbiosis, everytime closer to eden, the nirvana of senses. The fascinating sense enkindled by the myth is over the good and evil, and even the love to sport cars. It's probably something that nobody could define and the 911 drivers reach to feel when the car is being driven. Am I crazy about the nine eleven? May be, ... But God bless Ferry Porsche.

By Juankimalo

Do you thinkt that every owner has the same point of view? I don't think so... There aren't so many crazy guys as me
