Default 996 Performance upgrade thread

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a thread to identify and source all the odd bits needed for performance upgrades for our 996 cars.

We all know the basics; intake, headers, mufflers, chips, superchargers and even the plenum and then of course the various suspensions.

What I don't see/hear much of in the 996 forums are other bits and their sources such as...
underdrive pulleys
LSD Diffs
gear packs
Ring & Pinion swap
brake upgrade to larger model's and the bracket/adapters necessary
Camshaft upgrades
Independent Throttle bodies and runners (I know a little hardcore)
replacement ECU for spark/timing, etc such as megasquirt
etc...

I think many on these boards will tell you that with the exception of suspension and LSD (which is a possible factory option) none of these are "performance" upgrades.

I would love to hear an educated post about the various differential options.

I don't have a limited slip on my 99, and have often considered getting one. There are a couple options for me - the standard type similar to either what came in the original 99's, or a more aggresive GT3-type. There is also the Quaife differential, which also sounds intriguing.

What are the pros/cons of the various types for street, track, and bad weather?

Anyone? Anyone?

Paul, I am surprised too that no one has made underdrive pulleys for the 996.

ASP racing makes custom pulleys for whatever you want. You can just send them the stock pulleys, ID which is which, and tell them the % reduction you are looking to achieve.

There is one drawback to underdrive pulleys, slowing the alternator down can sometimes kill it fairly fast. Second, the poor cooling of the M96 may be magnified by the reduction of the water pump.

I have used ASP in the past and they are very cheap. You can get a whole custom pulley set done for probably cheaper than one pulley from Porsche.

One has to take the Porsche blinders off and look to the outside world.

I bet that there are many companies out there who would make a custom set of gears for the diff and clusters for the trans that are cheaper than the stock, factory ones.

Some companies that come to mind are Richmond gear, Tremec, Moroso, Auburn, and so on.

Good post paul. Personally I think the gearing is wrong in the 996 and needs to be shorter. Lots of guys over on the GT3 forum do rings or re-gear the tranny but it seems there's no info on it over here. Def. one mod I'd be interrested in hearing more about.

Cams would be interresting to me too. If my motor ever needs to come out I'm gonna do them. However I think the drawback is being able to find someone capable of custom tuning the ECU in the car to maximize gains....which leads to your custom tuning solutions (megasquirt etc).

FVD has an enlarged throttle body for the 3.4 cable throttle and they sometimes have them for the e-Gas cars.

I understand that regearing is available for our trans. I need to find the email about it.

My 5.2.2 DME was tuned by protomotive with a hybrid of 3.6 fuel maps and x51 stuff so that it runs the new 3.6 motor (efficiently).

996 Headers = 997 Headers. So the 3.8 x51 headers fit the 3.6 and 3.4 engines.

Same thing for the Cats... interchangeable.

The 997 mufflers do not work right out of the box on the 996 only because the 997 tips are place slightly different (but folks have modified them).
