Default Whine almost groaning from the engine....any input?

Hi all....

well....car has been making some strange noises today....and my search really doesn't cover too much, so here goes.

When the car is cold....b/w 1 and 2k rpm....there is an awful whine, almost like a loud groan from the engine, especially as the car winds down. It almost sounds like there is an extra belt running, if you understand that reference. it does not effect the performance of the car, but is very very annoying and obviously not proper. When I slow down and the car is under 100 degrees....it's very loud when it winds down.

at higher rpm's....it's not so apparent and never really fully goes away when the car is at operating temperature. This just started today. Almost sounds like something hydraulic is going on around the engine...very odd. Any input??

May be a pulley or water pump. Tensioner pulley is known to have problems. You can quickly eliminate belt or pulleys by removing the belt and see if noise is elminated.

Tensioner pulley is the most common cause for this type of noise. Cheap fix.

Another vote for tensioner pulley or water pump. I had mine both replaced under extended warranty.

Place a screw driver (long) agains the nut holding the pulley and you should be able to hear if this is the problem. It sounds like yours is well on the way out. I would not trust it for more than a week after it started. If it locks up your will be parked.

Hi Steve...thanks for the pointer. I haven't done any DiY on this car yet....which pulley would i do this to? Would I do it while the car is idling?

hmmmmm......noise is much more noticeable when i'm cold and idle, and when I turn the steering wheel, even just a little.....so I checked the power steering fluid while engine was hot.....nothing on the dip stick. Off to get some fluid...I'm hoping it's that easy. If it is....i'll have to see if there is a leak.

I'll keep you posted.

You must have a leak in the power steering system. Fluid expanding once warmed probably explains the lack of noise.

Check the pulley on the power steering pump as well while you're in there. I'm replacing the water pump this weekend. The noise for it changes with revs and does not diminish when the car is warm.

You used the correct fluid, right?
