Default My stereo doesn't like the cold

My stereo has apparently developed an odd habit of crapping out if the temperature drops below 70 degrees (hey, in South Florida, anything under 70 degrees qualifies as "cold"). Since we've had a relatively warm winter and the car isn't my daily driver, I only noticed it once before, and it cleared up within 20 minutes, so I wrote it off as a fluke. This morning, however, when I had to drive down to Ocean Reef Club (Key Largo), the stereo powered up, but no sound came out - I could hear the CD spinning around, but no sound - no sound at all for Am or FM and the FM presets had disappeared. Go figure.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with their stereo? It's still under warranty, so I'll have Champion take care of it, but it is bizarre. Can you imagine if I lived somewhere here it really gets cold - like 50 degrees?

If you live somewhere cold then you learn to turn on the heater.

Had the exact problem with my stereo when I first got the car. It would work for a while, then sound would just cut out, whether on radio or CD (I have a remote 6 disc). Dealer checked it out and found error code in the head unit (they thought) and replaced it. Problem recurred, and error code showed up in CD changer - that was changed, too. So I got both units replaced, completely covered under warrantee. Good luck!

Thanks, Phil. I'm sure they'll just swap out the head unit.
Preferably with one that doesn't shrivel at 65 degrees.

Mine failed in the summer - my guess is temperature has little to do with it. You know I don't drive my in the winter!

Same thing happened to me one day--It responded to jiggling the optic connection wire by the amp under the hood and have been fine since ('03 996). Good Luck!!

As the old saying goes:

When the weather's hot and sticky,
That's no time to dip your wicky.
When the frost is on the pumpkin,
That's the time for dippy dunkin'!

I laughed at this, and I have no idea why.

Because it reminds you of eighth grade, which is when I first heard it (and, for some reason, never forgot it).

I saw this morning and laughed out loud as it was 9 this morning when I drove in. Now my car really didn't like that but the radio worked fine .

If it makes any of you in the Frozen North feel any better, it's supposed to get down to the high 30's inland, and the low 40's on the coast tonight.
For us - yes we are weather weenies - that is freaking COLD. My dachshunds have to be all but tossed outside to do their business (ie crap & pee).

However, we are prepared - we have over-heated, bikini-babe-staffed Jacuzzis to prevent human weenie shrinkage.
