I used a air powered rotary cutter (and a prybar) to remove some more melted parts of my dash. The passenger airbag did not deploy in the fire. I am very cautious working around airbags with the cutter.....does anybody know where the bolts are that hold it in? Thanks in advance.

The point of origin appears to have been the stereo, as suspected. Here are some pictures.

Needless to say be very careful handling an airbag - especially considering the condition of the surrounding area.

Thanks mother. I read your post on 6speed about your run down the block with the SC working. Congratulations! I still dream of having one someday.....only two roadblocks...$ and the CA smog issue. I enjoy reading about yours. I have to experience them vicariously for now.

 

I'm looking for a dyno tester today and regarding the SC power I have been driving my toyota 4 banger around so pretty much anything is a step up, but it is more refined power then my old SS 396's of the day. They make it so hard to have fun in CA anymore but it is doable.

Looks like the amplifier may have melted some wiring that was laying on top of it causing them to short and spark?

Your willingness to jump in there with a prybar and a rotory cutter are very admirable. I always wanted to do a project like that with my dad when I was a kid, (but never did) and now hope to do a project like that with my son (due in February) someday.

Maybe I will start with something a little less ambitious, but a 16 year old kid with a Porsche he helped restore/fix up over the years - what could be better than that?

Congratulations on your pending arrival Joe. My three kids helped me with my last Porsche project. My boys are 12 and 14 and we enjoy working on the current project together. I can't wait to help them with their first cars. They both are saving up for 944s....I promised to match every dollar they save, provided they have at least a B average in school. I lucky that my Dad is still around at 80 and is always willing to help me or keep me company.

I finally got serious and yanked the dash out of my crispy critter...what a mess! What did I get myself into???Now the fun part starts. I'm not sure why Porsche elected to not put any type of corrosion protection on the support for the Dash. I will definately rectify that problem along the way. I can't believe how much @%#& is lurking behind that dashboard.

Good God man....I look at those pictures and almost feel guilty for selling you that car. It looks like something that hit the garbage junk bin in that scene from StarWars. You need a freakin' electrical engineering degree from MIT to get through that maze. Hat's off to ye' m'lad. I've gotta get up there and take a look at this in person. You've got to be a masochist.

And BTW....you can keep the CD's....since they're fused in the back.

Well, it was nice of you to let Mark keep the "burned" CD's.

 

Chuck, it's looks pretty bad at this point. Once I rip out all the melted plastic & burnt wiring, I can attack it with my shop vac. It should start looking better soon.
It isn't nearly as hopeless as the other one was.
