Default Can VA ticket you for expired DC tags?

Too busy messing around with the rollbar this weekend to replace my dc sticker in the windshield. Come back from lunch to discover a $40 ticket. Further, it seems as though their stupid ticket devices aren't equipped to write up dc tags as it shows the expiration date as 10/2006, when the ticket was clearly written up on 10/24/06. As I recall, in VA, the tags are good through the end of the month. PLus I thought there was a grace period.

Do I have a case here? I'm just annoyed right now.

Yup. They can ticket you. You're essentially driving around Virginia in an unregistered vehicle (expired registration). The same thing happened to me -- I got pulled over on Constitution Ave. in D.C. because of expired VA tags. Fortunately, they let me off on a warning.

Get your registration renewed and do one of two things:
  1. pay the $40 ticket and forget about it -- it is not a moving violation so no points.
  2. go to court and show proof that you've renewed your registration and they will usually drop the charges -- not worth your time in my opinion.

Dammit. I already have the renewed registration. I will photocopy it and contest the ticket by mail.

HA! Also, I don't like that you called the ticket device "stupid", it's not it's fault you wanted to be racer X..

Ha ha. I think the ticket device is a pig

I guess I should have said incompetent since it cannot input the day of expiration.

Yeah. In VA we don't have an expiration day -- just month and year. As a result, we have until the end of the month to renew the registration. I guess in DC you have to renew by a certain date?

There is a date on the sticker. It doesn't show up on the ticket so I was going to contest it since according to the ticket, it has not expired yet. Stupid argument, yes, but worth a try maybe.

In North Carolina the license tags are good through the 15th of the month.
