I'm considering trading my M5 for a new 911 and am wondering how practical/comfortable it will be as a daily driver (except for snow and bad weather). Seems like most of the used ones are low mileage suggesting that they are driven as second cars. Anyone?

Very practical for up to 2 + kid under 10 if you can organize yourself and have a second larger car. I use mine as daily driver and when I need more space I use my wife's audi Wagon

I traded a 2000 M5 for my 2001 996 C2. I have yet to miss the M5, and I do drive the 996 is my daily driver. For winter driving I plan to get an Audi Allroad. I think the 996 would do fine in the snow with the right snow tires, but it would take a beating from the salt and pebbles. I drove the M5 in the winter and it did take a real beating. Even with the Audi, I still plan to drive the 996 on nice days in the winter.

Absolutely a daily driver. 35K and still smiling. 98% of the time, I'm the only one in the car. Comfortable and a pleasure to drive. Go for it or you'll regret it someday.

I drive my 2001 C4 most of the time. Try not to take it when I know the parking conditions are not favorable. 8000 miles in 9 months, would be more if I was not in Europe for 30 days. I miss it everytime I see one fly by on the Autobahn or the Autostrada. Toured the factory July 17th and saw the 2002 Carrera's, C4S and the GT.

The best! That's really why Porsche has such a grand reputation. BUT! If you do drive it in the snow/ice, which you are bound to do because it is such a great daily driver, I have found that without snows, even on C4's and turbos (I've had them all)- and even then I don't believe it!- they suck. The computer overcorrects for the slightest loss of traction and the car slaloms merrily down the road in computer corrected control of the car. I have to admit, I (the car, really) never went off the road, but I never got used to going "serpentine". FYI: I lived in Steamboat for many years (Rockies) and now have a place in the Maine Mountains.

My C4 is a daily driver as well and there are a surprising number of carerras and boxters in my train station parking lot! I was planning to use an SUV in the winter (as in prior years) but given some of the interesting responses to my winter driving post, I'm seriously considering buying some 17" rims and snows and giving it a try through the winter this season.
