Post About The 2002 911 Carrera...

The British magazine AUTOCAR had this to say:

"Porsche is especially proud of the 911's new cupholder. It slots neatly, almost hidden, into the surround below the centre air vents of the otherwise barely revised dashboard. Push the right end and, first, a spring-loaded arm swings out to reveal a single cupholder. Pull that and it extends to release a second one. Clever, and more effective than the previous afterthought device that attached to the side vents.

We can thank the Americans for that. Don't you love 'em? Here we have possibly the world's greatest sports car and the improvement they identified as the most crucial for the first facelift of the nearly four-year-old 996 Carrera was cupholders that work."

Yep. even worse: they're the same as on my wife's Audi!!!
I guess that we now know why there aren't any RSs or GT3s here... People care more about cup holders than anything else....

Jean-Marc,

The 2002 cupholders are different from those seen in 2001 cars which were similar to the Audi's. They are really trick. Even better than those in the Audi.

Sweet! I'm gonna trade in my 2000 for a new one just for that cupholder!

The '02 slim line cupholder allows the return of the climate control panel to the slot above the radio. So now you can splash your boiling hot latte there first , before it mucks up your CD/radio , CD holder tray, DSP panel/oddment tray , gear shift housing, and finally your mats and shoes.

I don't even have a cup holder in my '99 c4, and I'm glad I don't. How can you sip java when driving a 6 spead manual transmission sports car? I guess if you're in a triptronic the holders may be more relevant.

You have the Americans to thank for the 996...period. (Hmmm...let me see...let's take our best sports car...make it more plush...add more room inside...make it real quiet...put in a cheap plastic interior...offer wood paneling (and cup holders!)...and make it look identical inside and out to it's $30,000 cheaper little brother...and voila! A luxury GT car that used to be a "sports car"!

I liked the old ones better. Keep them away from the center air vents AND the center console!

Anyone who can drive without spilling a drink in the cupholder shouldn´t buy a Porsche (just a matter of speak, no ofence meant)
Cupholders in a Porsche... what´s next Citroen´s gas suspensions as an option too

Brian, in answer to your question - very carefully. I've been doing it with a 6 speed for 2 1/2 years. No spills. Have a wide bottom mug with no slip rubber on the bottom that balances very well on the center console over the ashtray. Gotta have that coffee on the way to work!

Brent,

Or you could try drinking a lot of coffee before you leave the house. It will actually help you to drive faster too.
  • you'll be amped from all the caffeine
  • you'll be unencumbered by the coffee cup, having both hands free to drive
  • you'll be in a hurry because you'll likely need to pee when you get there.
