Default Handsfree Mic in 2000 996

I called the Dealership today to find out if they could integrate the handsfree mic in my dash with my phone. They said that there is no retrofit kit for the 2000 model 996.

Does anyone know what the mic is for then? Can I still integrate an aftermarket phone kit to use the mic?

It just seems odd that the mic is there, but there isn't a way to use it...

installed the Motorolla HF850 Bluetooth kit. Comes with a mic and you can hook it up to the std phone prep that all USA/CAN vehicles have (in lower console). You can order a kit from Becker USA ($17) that has the tools for pulling out the radio and a connector cable for running the phone output thru the car stereo. I have it and I love it. works great. total cost about $200. Easy DIY install.

I'd recomend you to buy a Becker. Porsche has this brand as its provider. Have a look with the following model:
Becker Indianapolis Pro
it's the same design as yours, but with MP3 , iPod connector, Navigation system, and besides, a bluetooth handfree telephone technologie incorporated.

Is there an equivalent model for the US? Are there any dealers in the US?

Do you have Bose? If yes, the mic is for the Audio Pilot feature of the bose system.

I installed the Motorola hands free kit in my 2001 C4. Wired it into the radio so when I get a call it mutes the radio and the head unit says "PHONE" on it.

I ran the mic up the A pillar and put it right over my head between the liner, worked perfectly.

I fitted my mike in the dash but it picked up a hell of a lot of noise. The receing end couldnt hear me at all. So I remounted it on the A pillar and it works brilliantly.

What's the Audio Pilot feature that comes with the bose? I have the phone mic mounted by the rear view mirror, but don't know how to get my phone hooked up to it.(Previous Owner had it installed)
I know RTFM, but it's not around right now.

There is a hands-free mic in the dash? I have MY2000 996; where is the mic located?

in that little round grill to the left of the gauges. I wouldn't think the sound quality would be too good there. I first mounted my Motorola mic next to it with double sided tape and it was awful; nobody could hear me over the noise of the car. I did what Riad did and ran the wire up the a pillar so that the mic is just over my head to my left and it works great! BTW, I didn't even have to remove the pillar trim, i tucked the wire behind the trim at the glass; it totally disapeared.
Auto Pilot: it's a feature with the Bose system that adjust the volume of the radio based on the interior "noise". Hence the mic that is constantly monitoring the interior.

Yup, just push the wire into the opening, no need to remove anything!

Of course now with my cab I just tell people I'll call them back. hehe

I also have the Motorola Car Kit, and still have lots of background noise, even with the A-Pillar mount. The dash location was a disaster. Any ideas?
