Default 996 with 3 Spoke Steering wheel?

Hi, newbie question.. Looking to purchase a 996, 1999 to 2001. Was wondering why some cars have a 3 spoke wheel instead of the more mundane 4 spoke. Is it part of a package?

Also, I am looking for only a 6sp, coupe. Any options to identify from a pure sporting interest. PSE, others?

Much thanks,

-Paul

I believe earlier 996's had an option for the 3 spoke steering wheel. Not sure when, but then the 3 spoke became standard, although I have the leather 3 spoke steering wheel which was a $1300 option.

Not sure I understand your second question.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. Seems that some 99s and 00s have them. Good to know it was standard on 2001.

Nope. Wasn't standard on 2001. Mine originally came with the 4 spoke.

I think 03 or 04 it became standard.

PSE can be retrofitted. In fact, only PSM cannot be retrofitted. Of course, adding options later costs $$$$. If you can buy a loaded car for just a few thousand more, I'd do that. Get what you want and shop around.

It may not have been "standard" in '01, but it may be that 100% of the cars ordered for North America came with 3-spoke wheels. My Canadian-spec '02 has the 3-spoke wheel and has it listed on the option code list, which indicates it was an option. But I know that Product Planners will often decide to order 100% of their allotment with particular equipment they decide their market needs and then the dealers and customers don't get a choice.

Thought it became standard in '02 with the other changes to the car (including the minor revisions to the interior).

Dunno.....My 2000 came with a 3 spoke. But, who cares. I'd gladly trade it any day for a glovebox.

I have a stock leather 3 spoke on my '04 C4S - what would it take (parts and labor) to replace it with the optional thicker wheel?

Hear hear to that! It would be nice to have a glove compartment. I don't even have room to keep my registration in the car unless I fold it in half or keep it in the trunk!
