Default Tire size question

My 00' C4 Cab came with the 18" wheels (8" and 10") and the stock tire sizes (225/40/18 and 265/35/18). I am upgrading to new 18" with 8.5" and 10" widths. I found that the new 997's have changes the tire size on 18" wheels to 235/40/18 and 265/40/18. What do you think abunt running theses on a 996?

I thought it might close some of the opening around the wheels and body without new springs/lowering. Does anybody see or know of a problem with this set up?

I had the same delimma and went safe with the 225,265 scenario. No question that I'll be going 235, 285 next time.

I split the difference in the rear. 275 35, with 235 40 in front. I am very satisfied with the look, and no apparent down side

It will depend on what sizes are available from the tire manufacturer you want to use. There is a finite number of sizes available at any given time. With a 10" rear wheel I would suggest going with 285/30. With an 8.5" front, I would suggest either 235/40 or 245/35 (if they even exist).

Are you sure the 18' wheels you have are not 7.5 in the front? That is what came stock in 2000. I don't think they went to 8' until 2002. I have a 2000 and they are 7.5 in front.

Run a 225/40 and 285/30 setup.

That is your best setup as far as factory spec, in 02-04 Porsche ran on the Carrera in an 18": 18x8 225/40 and 18x10 285/30 and that was a better fit especially in the rear on a 10", less sidewall stretch and more contact patch in the rear.

There was an article in a recent issue of Excellence talking about the 997 that said that the move to the larger rear tire on the 2002+ 996 impacted its handling. Perhaps it augmented understeer or minimized turn-in? Who knows, but they seemed to allude that moving to the 235 up front alleviated the problem completely on the 997. I couldn't tell if it was the tires or the new suspension setup of the car.

Anyway, that's why I asked. FWIW, a lot of guys here are running 285s on their pre-2002 cars and I very well may give it a try when I get new summer tires next year. It does look really nice from behind what with the wider tread.

I went with the 225 front and 285 rear on the 18's. Happy with the bigger rears, and would do 235 front next time. Typically, if you are hunting for deals the 225's come up more than the 235. Good luck.
