Default The greatest high speed road on the East Coast?

Last week I had a very long week and was unable to drive my car. Sunday I woke up early and took a drive up to Short hills Mall in Jersey. I must say that the New Jersey turrnpike has got to be one of the best high speed roads in the states. Not only can you drive fast but the areas for troopers to clock you are very predictable. In addition the mentality of the drivers between Delaware and New York is pleasantly aggresive. Not that I condone speeding on public roads but on a nice clear day it has got to be the best on the east coast. All hail New Jersey you have one thing to be proud of

If you think the turnpike is nice, have you ever driven on 78 interstate ? or 287 North - newly paved raods, four lanes. You can pick your spot to open up your baby. I like short sprints and then I coast.

I agree, all three roads have sections with dividers making it difficult for oncoming state troopers to bang a U and give chase! Still PLENTY of hiding places off to the side for instant-on traps. In general, the Garden State has way too high a cops per mile ratio to be truly comfortable for sustained triple digit cruising. Laser is quickly gaining in use here also after miraculously being ruled unconstitutional when it was first introduced.

RJMDAD996: You mentioned "287 North - newly paved roads, four lanes", are you familiar with the recently resurfaced concrete portion north of Montville to Rt 23? On that section I get a strange speed-specific vibration around 85MPH in my car (996 w/ 18's). Have you noticed this in your car?

I live any stretch of divided highway that has guard rails on both sides. All you need is about a mile of WOT!

I-95....170 mph. the other night i was driving north on I-95 in Florida just north of Vero Beach...smooth and straight. There were no cars on my side of the highway...so i stopped in the interstate and took off, going to almost readline in each gear, as hard as it would go....reached 170 with about 1000 or less rpm to redline in 6th.....and i thought..."what would happen if a state trooper clocked me right now?" (cause there were places to hide and cars on the on coming lane) It occurred to me, what does it matter, by the time he turned around and came after me, i'm already in the next county...

I'm not much for the top speed roads like the interstates. Try the Bronx River Parkway, Saw Mill, Taconic - you can't open it up but those turns will put a serious smile on your face... it's as if Robert Mosses designed those parkways for Porsche lovers!

The portion of 287 up by the NY border (Jersey side) with its fresh pavment is just heaven for a high-speed run. If you drive it enough (I take it every time I back and forth between school and home for breaks) it is very easy to memorize where the cops will hide. Ive never seen them in any spot that I have not already known they have been there, and a V1 mounted high in the windshield helps picking up instant-on ahead. Ive never gotten anywhere near the speeds you 911 guys can hit, but Im still in college so my WRX works just perfectly for me Not to mention, the aftermarket is bigger and cheaper

I still love every chance I get when Dad hands me the keys to his 911 though. Definately have nothing but respect for that car. It WILL get me into trouble easier than anything else Ive driven.

Another good one is 495 Just across the state line into Delaware. It has exellent visibility. Traffic is relatively light. If your're ever on your way down south check it out.

One thing is for sure, never try to do a speed run on any road in Virginia. Cops there are crazy. I saw a guy get locked up in traffic court once for doing ~110 on I-95 near Fredericksburg (he was even military, didn't help any).

(BTW: I was nabbed for 85 in a 65 which was deemed as reckless driving, judge lowered it to 79 cause I was out of state).

Question mrs. orcutt's driveway?

ot: any 'listers on the west coast know where mrs. orcutt's driveway is? it's in the california high-desert near barstow. it's approx 5-miles of 'public' road that serves one resident. it's infamous for clandistine high-speed testing. i'm taking the p-car to vegas in 3-wks and wanted to drive it.

KW, that's a great story. Glad you're not a garage queen. 18mo 24K, driven hard.

how about the section of 287 south going through Boonton??? I was crusing as ussual in the 944 on my way to work at 8 in the morning in commuting traffic, we were all doing like 70. a deer jumper over the guard rail right in front of me. I didnt even have time to hit the brakes. I just squeezed the steering wheel and hit it square on. Ouch
