Default Defeat the clutch/starter safety switch ?

Is there a simple way to bypass the clutch safety switch that prevents you from starting the car unless you have the clutch pushed in fully ?
Is it possible to do this just by running a shunt wire between terminals or do you end up using a plastic tie to keep the switch activated all the time ?

Yes, either method will worl. I personally would use a shunt. It is a pain to engaged the clutch when starting. I guess a lot of people tend to start the car in gear? LOL

I did the latter method by using two small zip ties. I wrapped the entire sensor and sensor "arm" so that the switch is always depressed.

I works great; just remember to start your car in neutral!

If you don't like it or want to go back to stock, simply cut the zip tie.

Liability...Liability...Liability...

Here in the US if you start your car in gear and hit something/someone then it is clearly someone else's fault!

Hey, the zip-tie method sounds like a great fix. Does anyone have any detailed instructions and/or pics on how to do it? Thanks!!!

I believe the clutch issue is a US "feature". I know my car will start regardless of the clutch being depressed or not. At the same time I usually leave my car in neutral unless I am on some sort of slope.

RoW cars don't have this so it must be possible.

Yeah, well the RoW is not as litigitous as people in the US...as Houlds pointed out, the moment anything happens people think 'Who can I sue?' Pretty sad really...

Yeah I know. Really sad isn't it?

Just wondering: last time I was in the US (few weeks ago) I was in a hire car and I could not start the car unless the handbreak was on. Also could not get the key out the ignition unless the handbreak was on and the gearshift was in Park position. Car was a mustang (gutless piece of crap). Anyway, are these also features of US porkers?

Not a "feature" on any Porsche I have owned...or any car that I have owned or driven for that matter. Maybe a special feature installed in the rental?

But wouldn't defeating that interfere with the cruise control?

The starter interlock switch on the clutch pedal is a different switch than the cruise control switch.

The starter interlock has been around for many years. I am tempted to say 30 because in my younger days I had a 1970s Vega. It had the switch and I bypassed it.

The automatic transmission is more recent. I think that came about after the Audi thing.
