The pump will shut down when you drive away (if it hasn't already) but normal for it to come back on a few times at stop lights until all of the warm up parameters are met.

UPDATE: Pump seemed to run fine today. I think the problem is that the bearings in it are starting to go. It has a higher pitched whine to it and I can "feel", ever so slightly a vibration while it runs. I'll just order one and replace it when I get some time.
Thanks for the pics and the advice everyone!

Wait till u see the price....
make sure u r sitting down. Search as there is a mb (i think) part that works. U can also oil the bearings.

I have two '99s (cab & a coupe) and I've noticed the coupe's pump runs more frequently than the cab's but both are silent after the motor warms up. Most times I can hear the coupe's turn on at stops when still not fully warmed up.

I also have an SAI that is making the high pitched noise. Sometimes it's louder than other times. But it eventually goes away. Seems to be much louder on colder days. But that may be just coincidence. Listen to the end of the quick video, it gets louder.
Supposedly this Mercedes SAI which is cheaper than Porsche oem is a direct fit. However, FCP after countless emails back and forth has still not confirmed. After I finish a few other projects on the car I will buy this from FCP and see if it fits.

Hope it helps.

I found a YouTube video showing how to grease the outer bearing and it noticeably reduced the whine from my pump.

If you can find it please post! Good news is the SAI has a long life. Most are 20+ years old. So if you replace it, you can forget about it for a couple of decades.

With careful work you can replace the bearings, the right ones of these small motors are available via some of the RC car shops.. At least it worked on a Audi version of the thing..

It may be worth it to buy a used one for cheap and try.
