Default Problem with that little startup air pump

That little air pump that starts up in the morning, stays on, if I turn the car off and on then it stops.
( the one in the far left driver side corner of the engine compartment)

anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

That is the SAI (secondary air injection) pump. Pumps air into the exhaust to light up the cats. It actually does run several times during a cold start. Maybe just let it run for a bit of time. Otherwise, if it doesn't stop running, undo the electrical connector to the pump. Make sure the engine temperature sensor is in the grommet on the passenger side intake manifold and not laying on the engine.

I was under the impression that the engine compartment temperature sensor triggered the cooling fan mounted on the rear deck lid, not the SAI pump? Is that same sensor used in the SAI pump circuit as well?

do you have a picture showing where to look for that connector on the intake manifold?

It looks to me like the intakes are reversed on the photo in gbarron’s post. The air temp sensor is located between cyl 4 and 5 on the right side of the car when viewed from the rear. In gbarrons post the AOS is to the left of the air temp sensor and the AOS is located after cylinder 3 on the left side of the car at the flywheel end of the engine. The intakes are symmetrical so I believe the air temp sensor in that photo is in the incorrect position. It should be moved to the opposite corner of the engine.

Hmm...interesting comment as I pulled that picture from the Pelican Parts DIY section, they even describe the location as per the picture. Someone got it wrong? Differences between .1 & .2 series cars?

No, I think Pelican’s DIY is incorrect. I went out in the garage and took photos of an 01 and 02 C2s’. The first two photos are of the 01 and the second two photos are of the 02. Both have the temp sensor on the right side between cyl 4 & 5. The common step in removing the AC compressor is to remove the temp sensor so you can put a ratchet thru the eng temp sensor mounting position to access the back bolt for the A/C compressor .

Thanks for all the pictures! I really appreciate it. So I went out checked on that connector, it was tight as could be, I disconnected it connected it back up check the secondary air pumps connector, I'll look good, I'll see what it does in the morning cuz it's supposed to be 47°, which is very cold for San antonio!

If its the sai pump (drivers side rear) it doesnt matter what the temp is. It turns in for 30 sec to a minute when starting cold. Its an emissions thing and if its not shutting off then there is another issue, not that temp sensor.

so what's the ramifications of just disconnecting it?

SAI is controlled by the ECU. Have you checked for any diagnostic codes?

U will get a check engjne light. If u dont have emisions testing and dont mind the light then unplug as it wont hurt the motor.

no, not yet. I was going to wait to see what happens tomorrow, and then go from there. I do have a icarsoft reader.
