Default Need help, alternator bracket or engine mount cracked.

Hello everyone! I just got my 996 a week ago, and everything has been just fine with it but I noticed this crack when trying to replace the air filter. I looked at the car before I bought it, Firestone looked at it and didnt see anything wrong with the engine but we still missed it. I am new to Porsche and need a 996 repair manual, and some advice as to what part I may need to order.

You need a new alternator. Looks like the housing mount bracket has broken. You can get one from Amazon. Good luck with repair.

Since you are new to the 996, be careful with the oil fill hose. It’s old and brittle by now and can break easily. It’s right there where you are working.

I would suggest you find a local independent shop that knows Porsche's vs Firestone . There will be service or repairs that you are capable to perform on your own . There will be others that may be outside of your skillset . Those types of repairs are best to be performed by someone that knows what they are doing . Welcome as a new owner and good luck .

Read up on changing the alternator. It could Bree that someone tried to remove the alternator without driving the bushing in the back mount out of the alternator bracket and broke the mount. The rear mount has a bushing that is pulled from t through the gap bat the rear mount when the mounting bolt is tightened. The removal procedure directs you to loosen the mounting bolt part way then to use a hammer and drift inserted into the center of the bolt to push the insert out of the alternator so the alternator can be removed.
It is best to research the procedures for working on the 996 or take it to a shop that is familiar with them for service. Most all repairs can be performed by a knowledgeable owner with moderate mechanical skills if they have the proper tools and research the procedureds to perform the repair. Reenlist is an excellent source to get the necessary information to carry out service and repair work.

^^^Ditto!

Make sure it's a Porsche Indy, not a general car guy. If you dont have one, lets us know where you are located and we all can give you suggestions.
