Default 996 Intake "Orange Cap" / Resonator Delete Poll

After so much discussion about the "Orange Cap" mod on RL (mostly long ago), and after all this time, I thought it would be good to do a poll to find whether in the long term people kept or abandoned this simple mod. Please share your experiences with this mod by voting in the poll and posting your experiences with it.

Never tried but use a simple silicone pipe and then capped off the resonator box.

Yeah, I kind of wish I added poll options for the silicone pipe approach that eliminates the connection as it is presumably has the same result. Do you consider it a "keeper" mod, or would you envision going back to original at some point.

Did the mod over 10 years ago. Yes, I would do it again. Sounds great.

Here is a picture. Engine bay is a little dirty thanks to dust from road construction.

Mine is capped. Ran the car back to back with and without and honestly it sounds almost the same. This was after installing BB mufflers so not sure if that's a variable factor. Still leave it capped because why not.

I wonder if the high flow air filter helps and the silicone inlet?

Fwiw, over the years I went from bmc to kn to the oem filter. I didnt notice a difference in sound at any rpm. Didn't notice any difference in performance in the butt dyno either. But as we all know, the butt dyno may not be accurate.

Right know I am using the oem filter. just easier.

I understand. I meant I’m utilizing the more flow silicone and drop in BMC. I’m not ever saying your getting any significant HP gains but a engine will run more efficiently at higher RPMs when getting dense air. I’d like to believe Porsche engineers did design a fine intake system but with cost restrictions and reliability considerations I would also like to believe left something on the table that can be tweaked?

I have a feeling most have gone with the silicone pipe approach. I actually swapped back to stock for a bit as the aftermarket supplied cap somehow blew off. I found a better cap and went back to the silicone pipe and cap. I like it. Can hear more induction noise and its probably psychological but the car feels a touch more responsive. I wouldn't go back to stock. Next thing I would do is couple with with a 997 3.8 airbox.

I used an expansion plug with the stock intake so I can pass smog.

This looks like a good solution. Are you using the 1 1/2" size in your photo and does expand enough to plug it? I ask because the similar ones I see on Amazon (e.g.
Amazon Amazon
) look like they only expand to 1 5/8" (I think some of the plugs are closer to 1.75"). Mine would be going on a stock 996.1 airbox, not the 3.8.

My car came with the silicone pipe and cap when I bought it, so I can’t comment on the effect on sound. But all I know is, along with the Fister mod the car also came with, it sounds just like the race cars (albeit much less loud) at high rpm. Intoxicating!

Same here. With a stock (quiet) exhaust, the intake mod sounds better, particularly at WOT. I have a Fister hack on my exhaust, so that overrules the sound.

There’s a Boxster mod for this intake as well, and it really sounds great, as the engine is even closer to your ears.

There’s even an air box mod on the 84-89 3.2 Carrera where you drill a couple of holes in the air box for a better sound.

Most stock 911s are pretty quiet from the factory (unless they have PSE), but that flat-6 is glorious and needs to be unleashed a bit.

Does it count if you have an IPD plenum and a GT3 throttle body (and a black cap, and a FSI 3.8l stage II )
