Default Sideview Mirror Motor - update, new question

Keep moving. Nothing to see here. Just an old guy losing his mind.

My passenger side mirror is causing a fuse to blow. With that mirror disconnected I can press the adjustment button without blowing the fuse. The driver's side works as expected. I did that to eliminate the switch/wiring as a cause. Is it safe to assume that the electric motor is the culprit. Before I order a replacement, is there something else I can check to confirm that the motor is bad?

See below for question about programming mirror reverse tilt.

I think you are on the right track with the motor shorting out, unless there are some frayed wires somewhere between the dash and the door.

Examine the pins in the connector very carefully.
they are very sensitive and bend easily.

I know I have one completed used 996.1 mirror assembly I would sell for $25 + shipping if you are interested. I think it's the passenger side, but I would have to check. If you are interested PM me.

Update.

I had removed the problematic passenger side mirror to see if the fuse would blow when the switch was activated. It didn't. That indicated to me that the switch and wiring were not the problem. I reinstalled the mirror and ordered a replacement motor. I received an email that my ordered mirror motor has shipped. In the meantime I drove my car to pick up some oil and when backing up I noticed that my mirrors are working perfectly. I guess it was just gremlins. So now I can add the new motor to my growing inventory of brand new parts to be installed some day.

To recap the problem - I was backing up and the passenger side mirror didn't dip as usual. I used the switch to move it and it moved just a little and then stopped. I checked the fuse and it was blown. I put in a new fuse and tried to move the mirror again and it blew again. Now all is well in mirror land.

Sounds like it could of been your switch (in addition to your mirror), one or the other. Good it resolved itself. And I sold my spare mirror assembly to another member!

Update of my update. Both mirrors are working via the switch. The passenger mirror dips when backing up but the driver side doesn't. I tried reprogramming it - Key in but not started, put transmission in reverse, adjust mirror for tilted position, press M and 1 to store. The driver side mirror stays in that tilted position whether in reverse or not. Is there a step I'm missing?

I've had the car for 12 years and never noticed that the driver side mirror didn't dip. You are correct. I just verified it in the owner's manual. Live and unlearn.
