Comes down to what cab model (996.1, 996.2,997.1,997.2) you like/want, and what variation (C2,C4, C4S,Turbo,Turbo S), and what you are willing to pay for it.
For the 996, we on the 996 forum collectively know all the issues and solutions. For the 997, you would have to go to the 997 forum to ask. 997.1 engine is pretty much the same as the 3.6 996.2 engine. The 997.2 engine is not. Wish I could give you insight on the engine but don't have any experience with it.
If more hp is important, you can take a look at the 996.2 which is 320. If you want a wide body 996.2 take a look at the c4s cab. You may also be able to find a 996 turbo cab for a decent price which has the 996.2 look. The good and bad news is that cabs were more expensive new in general than coupes, but today they are less expensive.
Buy a mustang or Camaro if your looking for power if want finesse and style buy a 911 C4S if you want the same but cheaper buy a Boxster S it will tick most of your boxes

I went in the middle and got a 996.2 X51. 345 hp. Of course, I didn't know it when I bought it and neither did the dealer I bought from. I only found out when I pulled the build sheet it was a factory X51 car.
That reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask. How does one use an aftermarket shift **** when the shift boot is part of the **** itself?
This is what I got for my 986S that I've carried over to my 996. My current car came with the Carbon Fiber **** which I loved but it was badly cracking as most of them do, and it was bothering me. This one lights up and matches the color of the radio and air controls when lit up, so it looks really nice and great feel. It comes all as one piece so its a nice and easy swap.
All other things equal, is a 2006 S cab (no hardtop) worth a $10K increase over a 1999 C2 (w/hardtop)?
I would pay the difference assuming both cars have similar mileage and maintenance .now if that 06 cab is in mid 40s range, for $10k more I’ll go for a turbo coupe, that’s a lot of car at that price point.

Sorry, just saw the seller backed out. I can't stand time wasters like that. I get people change their minds, but figure all that out before you list the car. I'd have some VERY choice words for them at this point.
It’s a 2006 so I guess it is a 997.1. Specs say 355hp, vs the 296 of the 996.1.
I am sorry to hear that the seller backed out. That is messed up. I am not super familiar with the 997 market right now, but low 30s for a 997 seems on the cheaper side for a base 997, and especially for a S. Like Glen (GC996) said you should really just buy what you want/like. There are plenty of good 996s out there if that is what you really want. 997 hard tops are virtually non-existent by the way. I believe there is a way to retrofit a 996 hard top onto a 997.1 though.
I found a nice '99 996 cab asking $28k with 64k miles that was purchased in 2011 from a dealer and driven only 11k miles hence. It had the LSD and was nicely optioned in Ocean Blue metallic over grey with black top and a hardtop.
Before I got a chance to negotiate price I heard back from the seller of the 997 that it was still available. The price was only $8.5k more and from what I've seen, that's well below the going trend for these cars. It has 74k miles and, as it turns out, is owned by a Rennlist'er and long time PCA member. He's purchased this car 2 years ago from a dealer and apparently it's been well taken care of before and since. It has an AutoCheck score of 80. No accidents or issues reported. I read through most of his threads and it sure sounds like he was committed to sorting this car right.
It is really nicely optioned from the factory and he did some intake and exhaust work on it adding SS headers and cats, IPD plenum and chip tuned to match the increased airflow. Allegedly horsepower might be closer to 400 now instead of the stock 355. Not that that is the most important consideration, but it couldn't hurt. With the adjustable factory Sport Exhaust System, I can't wait to hear it. I'm not a big mod guy, but I do like helping a car breath better. If I bought a stock car I would not likely do the work he did, but as long as it's done, I will enjoy it. There are no codes and it runs, "Like New". No scratches or dents on the body, interior clean as well.
So...hopefully all's well that ends well. We'll see. Now I just have to figure out if I fly out and drive it back, or send a truck to get it. I might have to go get it. See I own a nice wooden sail & oar boat that was built by the almost 300 year old Lowell Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA. The seller happens to live 2 miles from the historic building. I might have to visit the nice folks at Lowell. I like nice coincidences.
So I guess this will get me kicked out of the 996 club. I hope the folks over at the 997 club are as great as you guys...

Just so you know check the cost of the transport. My turbo was in Riverside California they would have to truck it all the way to Katy Texas, 1698 miles. Anyway I was quoted almost $2000 . I flew and drove it back for a total of $700. Yes my time well I’m retired so I work for me inc. it’s also a wonderful experience and you get to know the car real well. I also put it to the test. There is a lot of dessert and big inclines on I 10. Between 6-7 hours I was doing 85-90 mph with ac on full at the outside temp was as high as 116. Car didn’t consume any oil and the coolant temperature was excellent. Regarding the 996 fórum, maybe you can keep both cars if your economic situation allows for. I believe the 996s will continue to go up in value. This was an endurance test, assures me I got a good driving car.

Slow your roll there! One car at a time! But probably not a bad hedge on this inflation crap.
I just bought a plane ticket to Boston for $139. Gas and tolls back? Who knows. I got shipping quotes around $450, but it sounds like a big hassle scheduling and adding another few levels of uncertainty.
