Default Welcome

Welcome to the club. The more you drive these cars the more you are going to like them. If you get involved in the porsche lifestyle, going to cars and biers, concourse shows, drives, social activities, the porsche itch will byte you and more than likely you will want to either upgrade or get another one. In my case I bought a 03 turbo coupe. No I ain’t selling my 99, my problem now is that there are not enough days in the week to drive both cars. These cars have a real bad enemy, heat. Highly recommend you remove the front bumper and clean between radiators and condensers. If you get into the PCA get togethers more than likely you’ll meet someone that has a durametric, he’ll be able to show you the cam deviations fuel trims and other cool things about the current status of your car.

Wow that is a nice car, well optioned.
I've also read that Clutches can get heavy when worn as well, I believe, not just from that spring. If it is that spring, I have a home depot spring set to install in mine, cost 2$, do a search here in forums for part #.
Anyhooo, welcome to the club. I'm a new first Porsche owner as well It's awesome you got a 99 early car with cable throttle. I spent money on a tune to fix the awful e-throttle lag. And you have an LSD, which should have been stock on these cars imho. Sweet!

Really nice car. Love the colors and the extensive laundry list of options. Enjoy that beauty in great health!

Not that I disagree, but I have pushed my targa pretty hard and haven't noticed any inside wheelspin like I did with my LSD-less Z4 and other cars. I suspect it takes a great deal to bring it on, possibly more than I would be comfortable with on the street.

OP congrats on the car! As others have said it looks to have been ordered by someone with a very happy option list pen. I would have a P(ost)PI done at a reputable shop to get a feel for the health of the engine and transmission, then drive it and enjoy it. Do oil changes more frequently than recommended, 5K miles is not a bad idea. You might think about a transaxle oil change too if the service records don't show one having been done. Also clean the radiators if there is no record of that being done either.

Can we play: "If this was you car, what would you do about this?"

Generally a 996 is not considered early production unless it was made 8/98 or earlier (production started around 11/97), so you probably have the updated spring/clutch pedal, but its easy enough to pop your head under there and check before buying anything.

And it looks like you've got your first thing to fix, if the clutch pedal force is too much. There is a 'helper' spring that breaks. They all do it. Here's mine. Replacing it is fiddly, but easy. It makes the pedal pretty light. Seems too light for type of car. Some replace it with the version for the turbo which uses a different spring.

Wait until you experience the flying foam bits from AC vents...

Welcome to the group!
I was going to bring this up. I just got my clutch replaced and its still quite heavy and bites about half way. I have to check my assist spring (Could have been removed for all I know). Is there any way to tell if its broken without removing? Its not that expensive so I would likely just order one before removing the old one if there is no way to check before removal.

EDIT: I just got in there and looked up and the spring is there, and pressing the clutch in, it appears to still be in one piece from what I can see. When clutch is pressed, can see the spring itself, but man was it difficult to physically push the clutch in with my hand while in that position. I guess I should just order the spring and replace it and see if its any better.

I did the same thing and pulled up the build sheet for my car when I got it along with original window sticker. Whoever originally ordered it must have really liked the M96 cause it was just shy of turbo money, may have even gotten into a basic turbo, not sure exactly what they went for. All in, my cars MSRP was $133,000 back in 2003. It is a C4 Cab.

Is that a hole in the leather? The photo is kinda low res so it's hard to see if that is the issue.. You can remove the shifter and take it to an upholstery shop or you could order an entire shifter brand new but that would be your most expensive option. 3rd probably middle-ground option is to find a nice aftermarket **** if you don't mind a non-stock look.

Yes, worn clean through. OE replacements look to be $330 from Germany. We'll see how much it bothers me.

There are a few slick looking aftermarket ***** on some cars on here. I have seen some Rennline ***** on forum members' cars that have a classic aluminum ball look https://www.rennline.com/rennline-al...***-sku-i14-1/

Black Forest Industries makes a very nice ****: https://blackforestindustries.com/collections/996

I know Momo makes some cool shift *****. There are a few people who make the "layered wood" classic Porsche / Carrera GT shift **** but I don't recall the manufacturer names of those. Pelican has one on their site.

Lots and lots of attractive aftermarket options for a fraction of the cost.

^ There you go. I was thinking of the "heavy" BFI **** when I posted their site I did not realize they manufacture a wood look as well. Very cool.

That reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask. How does one use an aftermarket shift **** when the shift boot is part of the **** itself?
