Default Vague steering at speed

Not sure if anyone has had this but did a track day recently temp was about 13 degrees in UK . Done about 10 laps going down straight at approx 145 and the car started to feel vague and light in the steering and slewed to the right fortunately stayed on the tarmac but was unsettling to say the least. Track was damp no previous issues. Is this something in the set up at fault here possibly or just conditions. Would welcome some feedback. The car is 996.2 targa well maintained.

Have you looked under the car to ensure that nothing is physically broken? I would not advise going 130+ again until you at least do that.

What are your alignment specs ?

What tires are you running and where are they in their lifecycle ?

Do you have any modifications (dampers, springs, bushings etc...) to your suspension ? If so, what are they ?

Any video ?

You said you did 10 laps, was the vagueness present for all laps or did it come on at some point in the session ?

Can't see anything obvious. Going to get it up on a ramp and have a proper look.

I've got OEM suspension set up. Pirelli P Zeros less than 1000 miles on them. The vagueness wasn't there on the previous laps taking the same line down straight. Bit of a mystery . Could it just have been some oil laid down not sure but it **** the life out of me. No video unfortunately would have illustrated it much better I know. Going to take it to a garage and check it over.

Given the fact that it wasn't there until it was, it certainly would prioritize assuring that a mechanical issue did not develop first. As an example, it is not hugely uncommon for the toe eccentric in the rear to lose its setting under track conditions and that could certainly lead to some very unsettling characteristics. I think you are on the right path with getting a checkover done and also making sure that whatever your alignment settings were prior to the track day are still true would be something I would suggest.

My guess would be alignment or a loose tie rod end in the steering or control arms. It may also be tire wear. I swap the front tires left and right side every 2-3 session.

Check your tire pressure as well. Those tires will inflate anywhere between 7-10 lbs on the track. Every track is different as to how "hot" one tire may become versus the other and when. You may need to run less starting pressure on one side versus the other. Or one tire versus the other. It's a constant measuring exercise before getting on the track and immediately after.
