Default Advise needed

1999 has been in local shop for almost 2 years. Initial repairs were both variocam selenoids and guides...IMS swap.Fuel trim issues followed with CEL. Shop repaced fuel pump, o2 sensors, coil packs, and now:
"just bore scoped this morning, found pieces missing on the IMS tensioner guide. The IMS tensioner guide and the loop guide are the two we didn't do when we got in and did the other guides. These are the guides that the engine has to come apart to get to."

holy.... 2 years? i hope they are not charging you extra for something they should had replaced to begin with. If they still have the engine out than should be easy enough for them to replace. best of everything to your journey in getting it out of there.

Another almost illegible synopsis... what’s up with this lately?

1) How about a little more history, hopefully in chronological order (ie: when you bought the car, what sort of condition it was in, mileage, service records etc...)

2) Why you took it in for service in the first place?

3) Why it’s been in the shop for 2 yrs. andcwhat have they done in that time?

Do you want "advise", like how often should I change the oil, or do you want advice, as in what should I do? Suggestion - get your car out of that shop and to someone who knows what they are doing. 2 years...oh man.

Haha yes well I'm supposing he's asking for us to advise him to ditch the car or the shop but we will need some more history to go that deep. @MOWMOW Please provide more context on both. 2 years is a helluva long time to have a customer's car.

People, and repair shops, will only do to you what you let them.

Haha, MowMow starts his comment with, "1999 has been in local shop for almost 2 years" as if this is a totally normal occurrence. If he's not a troll he's the most patient procrastinator in the history of car ownership.

You pretty much are at the point where you want an engine rebuild. Because while the engine might still be fine, the labor involved in taking the engine apart would be better spent doing a rebuild and keeping the car.

Of course, this is the most expensive option, but if you keep the car for a long time, the cost isn’t that bad (say compared to selling it as a roller and buying a minivan. Actually, the minivan route might be a tad more expensive).

Jeeze.....this is a messed up repair and sorry to disappoint the troll hunters. The shop wants to send the engine out to have the IMS tensioner guides replaced.
My question is, I know the variocam chain tensioner has guides but does the IMS tensioner also have guides ....and is that possibly the cause of fuel trim issuses???

On the 5-chain M9X engines, the camshaft actuator (or adjuster if you prefer) has wear pads that... well, "wear" out and the result is brown bits in the sump. This can lead to severe camshaft deviations and loss of performance.

And yes, the IMS tensioner paddle has a wear pad. There are also other chain guides that can lead to plastic bits in the oil too. Replacing all the chain guides and wear pads is definitely an engine-out service. Make sure you chose a reputable Porsche shop.

If you want to know more, I encourage you become a member of Jake Raby's Rennvision channel and watch this video on the subject...
