Default 996 is officially a classic

Say whatever you want about the headlights and water cooling, but my 996 is now officially a classic! Earlier builds have been for a bit, but my 01/2001 finally hit the 20 year mark. Now for a little more background...

Classic vehicle plates can be obtained in Connecticut for any vehicle 20 years or older (emissions are still required until 25 years). That 20 year mark has important tax implications. Vehicles in the state are subject to both sales and property tax (yeah that's some bull****). The property tax is based on 70% of the assessed value (Nada/KBB). In my county the mill rate is roughly 3% so my annual Porsche tax is in the $300 ballpark. After 20 years the assessed value is capped at $500 so now we're talking about a $15 tax bill. For somewhat obvious reasons, you'll see most of the the really high end vehicles in my area with NY or other out-of-state plates.

Forgive the current state. Still waiting on my coilovers and some other suspension bits to be delivered.

Enjoy that status while you can. Getting rid of the antique plate would be low hanging fruit for CTs progressive caucus based on the huge budget deficits coming down the pike. Legalized pot and on line gaming will only do so much. It's always constant quest for new revenue in the Nutmeg State. Such a shame for a place that used to be the low tax Haven of the northeast. Ok, off the soapbox. Cheers on the new plate and to your 996.

Alabama doesn't have a "Classic" status, but the tag/registration on my 99 996 is only $29 a year, we do have a " Vintage " status at 30 years old, that is only $10 and is " permanent" to the car..

fellow CT resident. Got my plates shortly after 1/20 for my 2000 C2. I like the monochrome look of the classic plates. Nice it “saves” you $ as they take so much either way

Okay, I’m confused. Why out of state plates if the value is capped at 500? Isn’t that good for a taxpayer. What am I missing?

For the classic Speedster it's great for the taxpayer. For the 992 Turbo S, bend over and spread em.

I think if I owned an air cooled, I’d consider vintage plates. In my short 3yrs of ownership in a 996, the majority of the (non-Porsche) population can’t distinguish between MY 2000, vs a MY 2020. If they were parked side by side, yes,but when I’m not parked around other Porsches, people believe it’s a ~MY 2018. 😎

I like playing that game. Vintage plates will just blow my cover. 😎

I’ve shocked a lot of people when they’ve asked what year my car is.
They can’t believe it is a 2002.

In delaware its 25yrs for an antique, there is no classic.

the good thing its a $30 yearly fee and requires no inspection. The bad is it limits driving to shows, parades or events.

Illinois here. Antique is 25 years. Vehicles displaying these plates may only be driven to and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service station or demonstration.
