Default CRC MAF cleaner really works

Just some technical FYI on the MAF sensors for 996 fitments and procedures.

There are 3 different MAF sensors for 996 cars... 996 606 "123" 00 for 98-99 , "124" for 2000-01 and " 125" for 02-up....Same for 986 cars.

The 123 and 124 are more susceptible to dirt fouling than the later 125 flavor. Interestingly enough, Porsche had a TSB for the 986 cars to go from the 124 MAF to the newer 125 MAF and a reprogram of the DME to match, but no such thing for the 996 cars.

With the cost ranging up to $955 for a Genuine Porsche 124 MAF, it is quite the costly repair. if you go Genuine Porsche.

I have been watching my fuel trims for years as I frequently drive with Bluetooth OBDII and Torque Pro on my Smart Phone dash mount and monitor all the OBD Data.

I have seen my fuel trims going slightly more off over the years and are were getting close to setting a CEL for fuel trim near idle.. Under full throttle fuel trims were good, just near idle they were getting further and further from ideal.

I decided to try the CRC MAF cleaner. I have seen many many products that do not do what they claim and are nothing more than "snake oil". But this product lives up to its claims.

After buying a can, removing the MAF (two screws), 15 quick shots of the cleaner as directions, let dry for 30 min. Started the car AND IT RAN TERRIBLE as expected if anything had changed !! After running for 5-10 min the car was running beautifully and fuel trims were coming back toward ideal. After a 30 min drive the fuel trims were now PERFECT. I have replaced many many MAF sensors in the past, and I believe the overwhelming majority of them were just dirt fouled.

123-124 style , notice the end, very susceptible to dirt

125 style, not as susceptible to dirt

I think it is a good idea to use CRC to clean the MAF sensor every 4 years or so !!

I have several, the ELM327, the Viecar, and the OBDlink MX. they all work with Torque Pro and Android and give the same data (whatever is output from the DME protocol)..

The OBDlink MX is the best (and most expensive) but I use it all the time, it can be left plugged in and won't drain the battery. Automatically turn on and off. The cheaper ones have to be unplugged each time.

Default Funny that you wrote this today

I have been debating between the Johnsen’s 4721 for $6.71 on AMZN and the CRC for $11.15. I have both in my cart. Seemed like quite a $ difference but as an avid reader of your posts, I will go ahead with the CRC. Getting the CRC throttle body cleaner at the same time. My only symptom is a little bounce at idle when cold. But I figured it was a good thing to do.
Thanks.

Dumb guy question: what exactly does it clean? Is it the wire filament that gets fouled?

^^^ Yep! A few years ago I got a ton of codes when a CEL popped on. Cleaned the MAF wire like Porschetech suggests, and all was right with the world.

Yes, the "hot film" gets dirty. Very similar to the "hot wire" sensor types.

This short video has a good animation of the air flow through the Bosch "hot film" MAF..

Nice PSA, I have had mixed results either no change or a little change for the better. Typically the early cars with the MAF as you suggested. Wonder what makes the early ones more susceptible to dirt and fouling?

The dirt on the "hot film" effects the sensitivity more at very low velocity (near idle).

The 123 and 124 MAFs get just as dirty as the 125 MAFs, but the 125 MAF has a redesigned air flow through the sensor to increase velocity. and re-calibrated to a higher range so the the decreased sensitivity at low velocity has a lesser effect.
