Funny you should bring that up. I am looking at the mid-upgrade (Spec class prep). One step below the oversized intake valves. If I find an extra stack of money hiding somewhere, I will step up to stage 3. But then I would want chrome-moly connecting rods and a bunch of other upgrades. Not sure going whole-hog on this engine is the way to go. Now if it were a coupe and I were taking it to the track, as opposed to playing in the dirt, I might have a different perspective. Then again, maybe not...

Time to crack the crankcase carrier open.

I am not looking forward to installing the pistons, pins and clips. That looks like an adventure.
A little inspiration:

A lot of nuances captured in the DVD and in this next shot. Was nice to know, in advance, what to look for. Will need to try and stay a few chapters ahead in my studies...

Not a whole lot of progress. Just getting things lined-up, parts sent out and parts ordered.
The block halves are at LN. There was a bit of concern, on my part, that jumping to 3.8 might be too big of a step. I'm less concerned now, as I will be sure to break-in the engine using the method recommended for RND rebuilt engines. Will also be doing my best to monitor air/fuel ratio to guard against over fueling. Another thread is out there that is doing a good job of looking at that.

I took the crank and con-rods to my engine shop. They should be fine, but I want to have this verified.

Not waiting for verification, I ordered main bearings, rod bearings, carrier bolts and thrust bearings. All from Sunset Porsche. Prices are surprisingly reasonable when compared to most vendors. Also ordered a gasket kit (from ECS Tuning). Interesting that this kit was only $185. I checked on that same part number (Victor Reinz) and that same vendor, this morning, and it was $60 more. What? Will have to check that it isn't damaged. Maybe it was old stock. Hopefully there isn't anything that degrades significantly with age.

I've started an Excel file capturing all the parts, part numbers, tools, prices and supplier. Should be interesting when all done. Probably shouldn't let my wife see it.

That's happened to me on other items with ECS. I bought some parts for my VW at very good prices (which they honored) but the prices were updated almost immediately after the purchase. I think they have so many items that some are not updated until its too late(for them)

Got your PM.

By the way - your movies were good.

Parts are slowly coming in. Got a gasket kit on Saturday.

Hope to ship the heads out this week. Need to find two sturdy boxes in the right size...

What could easily be made to work in a mid-60s Japanese monster movie, this hideous beast, actually came courtesy of China.

A little ultrasonic cleaner and some chemicals were waiting for me when I got home. Results seem good so far.

Hey Scott,
Is that the 30L unit? I've been contemplating getting one of those. I have a small cleaner now, but bigger is better
Also, are you going to pin/weld the gears on your IMS?
Keep on keeping on, dude.

Hey Gary - yes, 30 liters. I didn't want to get a little one, and I didn't want to get silly. Though that, is certainly never out of the question.

No plans for pinning the IMS gears.

Oh, the preferred nomenclature is; "keep your stick on the ice".
