Default Wheel size

On my 996 I have the original 1999 18" Rims 18 x 8 and 18 x 10 with 225/40 18 265/35 18 tires

I have a set of 2006 997 rims. The 997 rims seem to be the 18 x 8.5 and 18 x 11 rims with 235/40 18 and 265/40 18

Will they fit my 1999 996 with out any issues? They bolt on just fine.

If I use the 997 rims with the same size tires on the rims now, will the speedo be off?

Would you recommend using these wider rims and larger tires or DE days or for all season tires for more comfortable daily driving or longer trips?

Thanks.

The bolt pattern is the same. If they fit and don't rub, you should be fine.

I don't think there is a universal yes/no answer, since it depends on your suspension setup. You might get a yes/no for a car with a stock suspension/height, but you didn't say.

I run 18" diameter 8.5" and 11" wide rims on my 2002 carerra (narrow body) and they fit. I have GT3 control arms on the front and x74 suspension which is very low, so I have a pretty aggressive setup. I have had rubbing under some setups (GT3 control arms fit in two ways, and one created too much caster and thus rubbing). None of this applies if you have a stock suspension.

I don't know if there is a best usage for the wider rims. They will give you more traction and alter dynamic handing. They're great for the track with the right rubber. I run mine on the street with street rubber. They add to the fun factor of driving the car.

Oh, and the speedo is fine if the outside diameter/rolling circumference doesn't change. Both of my cars are off (high) by 3-4 mph with any wheel combination including stock carerra 17" rims, and I haven't noticed any additional changes due to these rims.

U need to find the offset number on the wheels to be sure. I think it around the fill valve. If the 997 and your rims r for a narrow body they should work fine. I can also space themn9ut with spacers and longer lug bolts but u may have to roll your fenders or increase the camber on the wheels

Thanks. The car has a stock suspension. I will look at the off set, but if I recall, its right. When I drop a plumb line from the fender down, the wider rear tire is out about 2 CM more than the 996 rims and still seems to clear. These rims are from a narrow body 997 so I think I am good.

Time for the street tires on the 997 rims and I can then save my summer tires for the 3-4 DE events per year I think I may do.

Soon I will be looking at replacing the original bushings etc on the car. They have 76k on them. That project is the subject of another inquiry.

I purchased a set of 996.2 GT3 narrow body wheels for my 1999. They fit, but I will roll the rear fenders to prevent rubbing on the lip. The GT3 wheels are 18x8.5 and 18x11. Typically when you find 996 wheels that wide, they have the wide body offset, which will not work on a narrow body 996. I also have RSS lower control arms installed with about 1.5 degrees of negative camber, which helps with fender clearance.

Just to clarify: 996 GT3 rims have narrow body offsets.

True. There are other Porsche rims of the same or similar sizes that have wide body offsets. You need to verify before you buy.

Default Rim sizes

Can some one translate these numbers from the rims?

Is the "ET" number the width? Looking for the off set to see if these are ok for my 996 stock suspension.

First numbers are width in inches (8" fronts, 10 inch rears), second numbers are rim diameter in inches (18"). ET is offset in millimeters.

I run these same wheels and even have 5mm spacers in the rear without rolled fenders and lowered with never a problem and they are 295s on the rear. They fit perfect actually.

Very dangerous to run a 265 width tire on a 11" wide wheel if it's even possible to mount it on the wheel.

Any one know what the “h2” after the 18 means. The rims on my 1999 do not have the “h2”.

H2

Type of wheels flange. Wheels flange is a bulge on the wheel in the place where the tyre bead lies on the wheel. It prevents the tyre from falling inside of the wheel.
