Default Coolant Leak - Happy 4th of July

Here was what I saw this afternoon in my garage. Drove about ten miles this morning and parked it here. Could not tell from looking under the car where the leak was coming from. Others have suggested water pump....

Towed to my Indy shop this afternoon, will know Friday what is going on. Very not helpful to happen the day before a holiday, but at least it was home and not out of town. Sigh....

Great news you were at home though, I expect an easy fix. I want to share my oil leak maybe to make you feel better. A family member hit the curb at the end of the driveway at speed, BANG! Dislodged the oil plug...

Wow! That could have been a complete disaster. Hate to think about two gallons of oil on your concrete driveway- ugh.

That coolant leak looks to be more center to the engine and not left where the water pump is. Hopefully it is just the plastic coolant connector just to the right of the alternator. But, I don't understand...why would you not investigate the leak yourself? All you have to do is pull the air box snorkle off and you can see everything.

Sorry to hear that, and hope you both get your cars fixed soon.

Porsche has a minimalist skid plate (p/n 99610798100. labeled heat shield at auto altanta), and LN Engineering (Bilt) has a heavy duty one called a sump guard plate.

Either of these might have helped avoid this, and might be worth picking up going forward.

I have the Porsche one and it gets a fair amount of scrapes at x74 ride height. I also have a LN/Bilt one, but when I went to install it, found the rear mounting to be a hassle, so didn't install it yet (but want to: it is much more substantial and has a larger coverage area and attaches to much sturdier mounting points).

Ouch! Count your blessings. This could have been a more serious situation. I've had coolant issues on these cars too. Ended up being a cracked expansion tank. I'm sure your indy will pressure test it for leaks and find the culprit. Hate you missed out on fun during the holiday.

Fair question. I looked underneath, and saw that the volume was more than just a simple connection that got loose. So figured it would require parts, called my indy and they had time to look at it on Friday and a tow truck was available yesterday afternoon. Also this is my daily driver, at least through August as my daughter has my wife's GTI in North Carolina for the summer. Since I had no parts, the quickest way to get it back on the road was to send it to my indy and hope that he can get the part(s) on Friday. Not ideal, but kind of my reality right now. Fortunately the old car has been very reliable.

Thank you! Yes, disappointing as this is my class reunion celebration over the weekend and I would have liked to have had it. But there is a chance that I can get it back late Friday. If not it is not a big deal - I have repossessed our Jeep that my son drives and told him to get rides from friends today LOL.

Update - it was the water pump. Being replaced today - not what I wanted to hear, but if it was the original water pump it is just as well that it is getting replaced. So - will be back on the road later this afternoon.
Oil change and console glove box hinge update being done today as well.

Take a picture of the old water pump and post to Rennlist. Curious on the condition of the impellers. Thanks!

Sorry - they tossed the part after showing it to me, and before I saw this. But the impeller blades were pretty worn, and more importantly the bore that the impeller rides in was out of round, causing the coolant leak. I would say it was worn out, but in a good way that was not a catastrophic failure.

Must have been the metal impeller to have worn the bore !!!! Not good....
