Engine out work..tips suggestions.
Well, after trying to make sense of the records of the cars history I have come to the conclusion they may have been falsified or mid represented. Thus my local Indy who has a great reputation and only works on German cars is going to do some major work. The car has 103k miles.
Drop the sump see what’s in there.
check the cylinders for scoring
AOS
Rear Main Seal
though the clutch seems good...it will likely get replaced since he is in there.
IMS solution.
what else should I do or check since it will be out, short of cracking the block.
chain tensioner?
spark plug tubes?
i figure I want to take advantage of the ease of access and take advantage of the labor cost of dropping the engine
anything to check on the transmission?
i appreciate the advice.
——————————————- advice given
waterpump
check coils for cracks
cam deviation

The water pump is a five minute job with the engine out. It's doable but much more difficult with the engine in the car. If you don't know how old the water pump is I would change it along with the other stuff you mentioned. Put in a new low temp thermostat at the same time. The plugs and tubes are a DIY job, albeit a fiddly one. If you're not inclined to medium DIY jobs, have them change the plugs and tubes. You didn't mention the year, but only MK-I cars have the plastic tubes. Have them check the ignition coils for cracks.

If your talking spark plug tubes then we must be talking about a 5 chain engine. If so, then be sure to check cam deviations. If they are greater than 4 degrees (usually negative and usually bank 1 is worse) then Variocam actuator pads should be on your list.
You can scroll through my thread on taking the engine out to get some ideas:

How much do you like working on the car? I've done the plugs and tubes twice. The first time took a long time, the second time just a couple of hours. I suggest removing the mufflers and wheels to make the job easier. If it's done with the engine out, it's 5 or 10 minutes.

UI am using German Auto Care in The Woodlands. He was recommended. Only works on German cars. Fair price and honest
How would I price it?
I guess taking it to CarMax or Texas Direct Autos and getting an offer. They can then do with it as they wish.

Do not take it to CarMax or some other auto place to dump it. Karma is real and it is a bitch. Probably former owner knew something was wrong as well. A roller with a bad engine will get $5K at best. Have your guy drop the sump plate and see what is in there. Has the IMS bearing been touched? If the engine is out I would have him pull the IMS cover and inspect the bearing. I know it amounts to money, but some diagnostics first will help pinpoint the problem.

I don't know that I agree about not selling it to Carmax or other wholesale type dealer. They are giving you a price that accounts for the unknowns, which is why it will almost certainly still hurt quite a bit. It's a very different situation from a private party sale where you would have to intentionally misrepresent the car or its maintenance history. Carmax won't even ask.

I wasn’t following this thread closely, but I’ve seen a bunch of cars sell when the cost to repair at a shop is too high to swallow. I’ve purchased a few of them, since my time plus discounted parts makes it a much more economical proposition. Again, not sure that is what happened here, but it may not be anything nefarious.

Yes, He deleted an entire portion of his post #8 about metal shavings found on his magnetic plug and metal shavings in the oil filter. Also said the indy recommended getting rid of the car.
