Default Funk in oil pick up

Hi guys,
today I removed the oil pan of my 2003 996 4S. At the oil pick up I noticed some fluffy debris. No plastic, not metal. In the bottom of the pan: nothing what so ever. Noteworthy: One year ago I changed the oil filter for a spin-on version. Otherwise the car runs fine: oil pressure OK. I run 5w40 Castrol which is changed every year. Please enlighten me on this one.

Yes I thought about that, but the filter has been changed one year ago with a NAPA element.

Pull the NAPA filter and cut it open, see if it has came apart, **** happens. The NAPA filter has no by-pass so can build up excessive pressure if the temperature is extremly cold, too thick oil, engine is revved too much while cold. Cut the filter open and inspect.

Right, but what’s to say it was this filter? When was the last time you pulled the pan? Could have been from a previous filter. Could still be the NAPA. A year is a while, depending on how many miles you drove.

Right, could have been there for a long time? When was the last time you checked the pickup?

The reason I suspect the NAPA filter is the all the previous filters were the cartridge type (can't help but to take a peek at the filter element when changing). The OP stated that he had changed to the spin-on type filter (NAPA) a year ago. I guess we will see when he cuts it open.

Most Mechanics or shops (unless race shop or 996 specialist) don't have an oil filter cutter, it's just not something that 98% of the oil changes require.

Agree it looks like filter material. It could be worse...

The Napa Gold is the best filter on the market. Constantly we are cutting filters open, and examining them.

85eurocarrera, you are losing a cylinder. That material is the piston skirt coating. Can I use this picture in an article I am working on now on bore scoring? This is an exceptional photo!

It's actually my photo. I sent it to you several years ago and you kindly informed me of the bad news. You are welcome to use it. I quickly traded that car in and got over my desire to ever buy another 996.
