I knew better than to start it... But I had no idea why it died and I didn't hear any sounds when it happened. My mechanic has told me this morning that he checked the oil filter and there's metal in it. So now I'm on the hunt for a rebuilt motor.

Im not sure trying to restart it caused that much more damage. For metal to show up in the filter, it got there before the engine died most likely. These engines probably shed material before they slow down enough to stop and it still takes a little time for metal to enter the filter. I assume the oil filter is immediately after the oil pump? Which means that metal would have to come off the engine, get returned through oil passages via scavenging, or fall into the oil sump pan before being sucked up by the oil pump and pushed into the filter.

So it progressed from a light rattle/knock at 2500-3500 rpm, to a stall/no start, then start with intense rattle and metal in the filter..Maybe a failure analysis (autopsy) will shed some light on how and why this progressed in that way. Sorry for your loss.

I'd be asking to see that filter... Trust, but verify!!!

Yes, Porschetech3, it progressed as you've said. Light rattle/knock at mid rpms, then stall/no start, and then start with an intense rattle. I checked out the metal drained from the filter today and it's very fine (ferrous) dust (there are probably larger pieces in the oil pickup screen. Definitely something gone awry in the crankcase. I'm searching for a replacement engine now. Once I get this one pulled I will at a minimum examine the IMS bearing. For now it's a mystery.

We haven't dropped the sump. I'm assuming due to the engine clatter noise and the metal in the filter a full teardown and rebuild would be in order to reuse the engine, so I don't want to pay for the labor to just see what happened.

Try living "down under" the P-tax is even worse! Last time I looked up the short block it was 20k!

I would contact https://norspecdismantling.com/ for an engine. I have got so many parts from them including a tranny for 996 and new top for my 986. Best in the country from a service perspective.

Sorry for your loss.
