OEM cell phone ability? Navigation CD's
I just bought a 1999 996 and was wondering if I have cell phone integration. The manual seems to say that I do, and there's even a microphone to the left of the gauge pod. But I can't find anything in that book or dashboard to show me how to connect cell phone. Is it just cell phone ready?
I have this radio:
662 PCM 1 Porsche Communication Management screen with navigation, telephone module, radio, cassette player
680 Nokia DSP (Digital Sound Processing) audio system
Also, my navigation only came with one CD and it's for the Midwest. Does anybody have a copy of the Northeast, New York area CD that they can send me a copy of? I don't care if it's updated.

Hey there, the PCM1 doesn't have 'cell phone' connectivity with a device but rather a port for a sim card.
There was also the option of a physical handset.
Easiest way to get phone connectivity with a 'cell phone' for calls and music would be something like an itransit which is a hard wired FM modulator that comes with a microphone.
Or you could buy the AUX cable and plug it onto where the connection for the CD changer would go but that option is more for AUX.
Would you really use the navigation? Seems like it would be so far out of date it wouldn't really be accurate? Although I see where you're coming from wanting it to be usable

Updated 2015 nav CDs are available from Annapolis Porsche. The set comes with a software update plus the CDs in a leatherette zipper case. Cost ~$250.

If you’ve actually got the telephone module in your car, then there’s a chance that the phone will work if you install a SIM card. It may not though - you’re working with 20 year old technology.

Yea, so I'm thinking I'd like to find an old set of CD's, just so it works rather than displaying "deactivated" on my screen all the time.
Also, does that CD slot for the NAV also play music CD's?

I do not believe it plays CDs. I pulled the unit because I went with the GT3 console delete and replaced it with a CDR220. If you have the 6 disc changer in your frunk, it will play the CDs through the PCM 1.
I attached a sheet that came inserted in the back of my PCM 1 manual that states the telephone function is not active in the PCM.

Thanks. I don't have a changer in frunk. But I was enjoying listening to my old cassettes yesterday! That is, until I wanted to hear a song on side B. Then I remembered how much that sucks.
Anyway, I guess I'll search ebay or post here for a CD on the NY area maps. I found some on ebay that are not for my area. They seller wanted well over $100 for it! That's crazy.
If anyone has a disc that they wouldn't mind copying for me, I'd be forever in your debt.

Here's a pic of my kicking is old-school this weekend. Doobies!
Note the screen "Guidance Deactivated" yuk! hate that.
PS how the heck do I change the date? I go to the screen in settings, but it only allows me to change time, not date. It's WAY off!

I like the old school look of your PCM 1. It would be great if you could get it work properly, even though it's so old. You can use your phone if you need modern navigation.

In my case I just ordered an aux cable that fitted perfectly in the cd changer plug, the thing is that my 996 didn't came with cd changer from factory. I have looked around for hours to find a hack or solution to this as when I press cd I get the message "No CD Player" and have no sound, I'm open minded to any solution to this, Also, I don't want to use expensive bluetooth solution. Any help please!!!

From what I understand, you need to have an AUX option on the radio to use something in place of the changer. Looking at my manual from the PCM 1, it does not offer an Aux option.

"Hold down the TP button for 8 seconds until the screen says 'BECKER 1', turn the right dial until 'AUX OFF' appears on the screen, then press either button directly under the display for the arrows to change the setting from 'AUX OFF' to 'AUX ON'. Turn radio off. Turn radio on, AUX is now a source mode."
