Default radio squelching

My radio makes a squelching noise - I think primarily on one fm station. not the others. anyone else have that happen on their 996 turbo?

You're kidding...right? That actually is the frequency of your IMS bearing and the squelching noise is the bearing going bad.

This is a turbo. Ims bearing are not an issue.

OP, it would help if you posted the type of becker radio we're dealing with. And, does the noise still happen when the car is NOT running?

The turbo engine has a different, more durable IMS design, but it still can fail.

Here's Jake Raby's comment on the topic:

[snip]

EVERY Mezger flat 6 engine had an IMS! This includes 996 Turbo, as many have stated here.

I believe that having an "IMS" is a critical part of flat 6 engine design, and it is NOT a bad thing. The Mezger engine uses plain bearings that are oil fed, (just like my IMS Solution does) rather than any sort of deep groove ball bearing.

I am building a 996TT engine right now, and the thrust control surfaces of the IMS were shot after 42,000 miles. It also had 6 bent rods, so it lived a hard life, with a ton of boost. This wear can also be found with other Mezger engines, as the 4.1 engine I just finished (based from an M64.02) had the same layshaft wear.

OP said the IMS bearing is not an issue, which is still true despite the Macsteresque post. He did not say the Turbo does not have an IMS; he said the bearing isn't an issue.

Radio noise typically affects AM more than FM. If you are only getting noise on a certain FM channel, that suggests RF interference more than, say, alternator whine or some other issue that can be solved electrically/electronically.

Do you get the same interference on the same station in a different car at the same location? I didn't hear what you're describing in the MPEG file - I'll listen again at home with headphones.

I love crapping in threads MORE than the next guy, but did OP really need a diatribe about the IMS in his "my Turbo has radio interference" thread? Or was St. Raby just in need of a little extra attention this morning?

Found the problem of the OP's "squelching" noise. (see pic) Think he left this little buddy in the frunk. And yes Schnelly... it's the OP's dog.

Ok, I shortened the "Jake Raby diatribe" down to a few midget sized indians. You happy now?

I'm never happy unless I'm at home with my wife and my dog, ideally on a floaty lounger in the pool.

The rest of the time, I vacillate between sullen indifference and outright belligerence.

I realize you have a special place in your heart for St.R; I'm sorry for denying you the platform to fully express your devotion.

Maybe if I kiss up enough, maybe he'll give me a break on future work.

Ah, there again... maybe not.

Back to work.

Answers to some of the more pertinent questions.

OP, it would help if you posted the type of becker radio we're dealing with. And, does the noise still happen when the car is NOT running?

the photo of the system is attached. noise does not happen when running. just when engine is on. But it is not a noise that is constant oscillation the changes with rev's, literally sounds like random squelches (hear audio file)

Do you get the same interference on the same station in a different car at the same location?

Nope . this station comes in clear on my other cars.

thanks for thinking this thru and helping me.

If it's only on one frequency, I have trouble believing it's a wiring/ground/connectivity issue. It's got to be interference, either from an external source or something intermittently broadcasting in the car, though I have no idea what that could be. Aftermarket TPMS, maybe?
