Default Poor running after starter replacement

Not sure if this has anything to do with the work that was done to replace the starter recently, but it does seem coincidental........so......doesn't do this every time I use the car but so far, it does it about 50% of the time.....

Turn on ignition, allow the system to do it's self check, no errors shown.

Crank engine, cranking speed is much faster than the old starter but engine doesn't want to start. Stop cranking, turn off ignition and try to start again. This time the engine starts but has a high idle of around 1k rpm.....normally around 750.....this is with a warm engine btw.

Drive off, engine seems low on power and every now and then the engine kinda jerks, almost like a misfire. Engine will not run above around 4,200 rpm, at which it almost feels as if it's coming up against the rev limiter. Have to pull over and shut everything down and go through starting procedure again. This time is starts ok, idles at around the 750 mark and has full power.

This has happened in each of the last two drives over the last two days.

Before I take it back to the shop that did the starter work, I'd appreciate any thoughts on what the cause might be..........hoping it's just a loose connector...:-)

Thanks in advance for any help.

I recently read another similar thread but I can't seem to find it. In that thread the plenum was reinstalled a bit off-kilter which created a vacuum leak.

When replacing the starter, depending how you do it, more than a couple of parts are removed and plenty of opportunity to accidentally disconnect something or reinstall something wrong.

I would take it back to the place that did the work.

There's tons of vacuum lines routing were the starter is. Very easy to disconnect them when doing that job.

Probably a vacuum leak. Did you replace the Y-cable (starter/alternator cable) while in there? If not and you go back in you should change it.

They did replace a large, and expensive as in $92.75 just for the cable, main + battery cable. The guy that owns/runs the shop was a lead mechanic at Hennessy Porsche a few years back, so, should know what he's doing, right....:-)

Very cool. The Y-cable is the source of many strange electrical and charging issues. I replaced mine recently with a huge improvement in starter turnover speed and charging.

Since you have to move it out of the way to replace the starter - check the oil filler pipe for cracks while you're checking all the vacuum lines and intake plenum fittings.

The filler pipe did have cracks, and was replaced during the starter work.

Well in fairness to the shop, the car ran fine when I collected it from them. It was about a 20 mile drive back home and it ran great!

An update to this........talked to the shop today and they told me to check that the oil filler cap was on tight as if it wasn't, this could cause a vacuum leak and problems such as this.

So I checked and I could tighten it one more "click". Took it for three drives today and no problems. Not going to take it back to the shop yet, just in case this was the problem and so just keeping fingers crossed that the problem is solved. We'll see! If not, then back it goes.
