Default oh no

need estimates for top end rebuild; waiting for info from mechanic but thats what he thinks. roughly 75K miles.

no missed shifts...check engine light...low compression cyl 1/ bad leakdown #.

1. range of cost

2. range of time to do job

That's too bad... Your original engine lasted ? 3x longer?
Little unusual that it's cylinder 1, I thought usually it's cylinder 5&6 that are troublesome in these motors.
Lots of variables - simple resealing/rings/minor machining may only be 6k, if you have to start replacing parts - heads/cylinders,or start doing "while you're in there " stuff it adds up pretty quickly... Realistically low to mid teens pretty easily I think ..(I'll know/have a better idea/data point by the end of the week!)

You'll need to at least first check with a dealer and get a second opinion. One dropped cylinder head does not a $10K rebuild make. With nothing more than 75K to go on, I can't say. You could have this car running just as it is for another 20K miles or it could need one or more heads refurbished. Check with a dealer. This could be a $2K engine out or a $10K rebuild or a $20K 3.8 twin plug ... : )

If the other cylinders are producing normal compression, I'd suggest it is a foreign object damage anomaly, maybe a piece of a plug insulation dropped into the cylinder and scored the bore, and I wouldn't rebuild unless I wanted to do something or I was sure this was a time and attrition issue.

Difficult to tell at this point. Just valve guides, probably about $6-$7k. If you have ring or other hard part issues, it can get pricey fast.

you got about 325k miles on the chassis, right?

Mark from FD Motorsports did the top end overhaul when my turbo was owned by him 7K miles ago. Don't know how far you are away from those guys in SF. They have one of the most competitive pricing on a top end around the country.

all i can say is its gonna b pretty f'ing embarrasing (for porsche that is) if my fcar 575m engine (at 46k miles) lasts longer than this turbo at 75k...thats pathetic.

ok...

told metal everywhere

budgeting $35k for complete rebuild now...

wouldn't exactly say pcars bulletproof if they fail under 100K...75k is laughable.

will sell the car in 20 years at pebble beach to recoup expenses

You need some 2nd & 3rd opinions before you break out the checkbook...

OUCH, but at least you'll know what you've done to it and should be as good as new (vs buying another used engine which will have some unkonwns). If there's metal, you'll have to make sure your oil cooler and oil passages are clean out too.

I had a Na 3.8, 1 piston was put in wrong (20%) ring issue I think, rest 3%, total bill $4500, From a local reputable shop, Turbo may require a little more, but if all others are fine, start with looking at the 1?
