Your take-out engine is good. Sell to your friend and make some money.

Good luck getting a 3.8 twin plug for $20k
^ no kidding. I'm in for more than that for a single plug 3.6. (getting pretty far from stock internals at this point but still)

In any case, the 575 is not a terrible car to be rolling when the turbo gets re-done.

But didn't you buy that engine at LA Dismantlers? If so, how can you be certain that it really has 75k miles, or the miles stated when purchased?

This is unusual!

Yup my stock motor is good but the whole reason I got the Andial was so I'd have a spare engine to play with...

happy to give you info on what they 'find' when they open it up....engine just came out yesterday.

engine was from turbo s w 6k miles in pennsylvania...had info on car even before it got to la dismantlers...photos/odometer/records/name etc...engine was also put on dyno before install...looked great. i had about 70k miles into it when check engine light came on...

had started smoking on startup passenger pipe about 4 weeks earlier...wondering if any relation....no check engine light then.

my other/original turbo engine w 245k miles never smoked...ever.

also had a 911sc engine that went 240k miles...

so bit surprised here.

i had been alternating the turbo w the 575m during the week...guess will have to suffer w just the 575...:-)

So the only manifestation of a possible problem was smoke on start up earlier and a cel? Then you mechanic discovered a problem with #1?

Also who did you bring it to? PM if you feel more comfortable with that.

smoke on start up...sometimes...rmg checked it out...did not find anything.

said may have just been overfilled with oil...*they* have seen many turbos that 'smoked' on start up...i had not...only read about it. said to run at low end of dipstick. never had any of those issues with first turbo engine.

then cel...on...off...back on.

called to get it to rmg/bob grigsby...figuring it was an o2 sensor

ironically, on way in that am...cel starting flashing (not good for cc)...ran weak for about a minute...then cel stopped flashing/ran ok so kept going to shop...did not get hot/overheat.

had noticed what sounded like fluttering noise (like when we were kids and put a playing card next to bike spokes) occasionally...

guess i'll have the answer within a week.

Wow.

Flashing CEL is shut down time. RMG is good. Who is doing the rebuild or still figuring that out?

would have shut it down if flashing persisted...very brief.

I'm not a mechanic but I agree with your diagnosis/observation ... I assume the beat up one is #1 ? Looks like #3 also is damaged? Foreign bodies in the combustion chamber? Must be valves? That's going to be pricey - hopefully the bottom end is okay.

Detonation/knock/pinging/pre-ignition. Basically, portions of the gas mixture are igniting by themselves and too early. This absolutely hammers the piston/rod/crank.
