thanks a lot! That confirms one of two very opposing but both very credible sets of opinions I am getting on this...
Getting to be more of a mistery the more I dig into this.
Would be very interesting to see what numbers are casted into your rims, but I am betting a genuine German Weissbier that the number casted in the back of your rims is not a ...980... number but the "normal" 993.362.136.00 or ..140.00" ...
If you can prove me wrong, than this gets even more of a mistery and I owe you a Weissbier or a Liter ("Mass") of bier at the next octoberfest...
And as to the wheels for sale by LA Dismanteler, they have not yet answered my questions if they in fact are unpainted, a picture without center cap, number casted in the back etc. Good luck to them. I wonder if they are now salavaging the silver turbo S they had (or still have?) for sale (at if I remember right 189k?), on which these wheels still seem to be, which was already missing the carbon strut brace and god knows what else. But why would anybody salvage a turbo S , I would have thought this is a classic example of a car that today is worth more than its pieces. And if they still want to sell that car then with what wheels? Recreated ones?
They also have a badly scratched turbo S front wheel for sale which no-one would put like that on his car and for which they ask 800$ ... Again, if they are aluminium vapor finish, no-one can do it anymore. If they are high gloss paint, any scratched hollow spoke could be painted ... unless that ..980... number would be in the back which is what I have yet to see.

Now onto the question of the finish. . .
I suggest someone call John or Paul at Protosport in NJ. I think they have the answer. My wheels have never been refinished, but I think that there is a way to do it. It could be that some people call it "paint" when in fact it is probably not paint, but whatever it is, I think it is possible. Search the forum here. A guy in NJ had 2-3 TTSs I think and had Protosport fix his wheels. I don't think they did it themselves, but I think they know how it is done.

thanks, so that seems to be one line, and going by popular vote it looks like any tts I have seen pictures of sofar has those wheels. Also LAD came back and send me some pics, they too have the same numbers in the wheels that you have and look the same ...
And Porsche lists those wheels (# on box ...980..., number on rim ...140... or ...136...) as "painted" and the corresponding identical looking wheel caps as "high gloss silver paint". I attach the print off of PET, I am sure someone can do that for english as well, but all you need to know is "lackiert" means "painted" for the rest if anyone is unsure google translate.
The other opinion I have now had from 3 independent guys is that the spare wheels I bought (picture 1 above) look exactly like Aluminium sputtered or what Porsche used to call "chrome look" and what is at least mentioned on the 993tts technical info page 3 ... But when did Porsche actually supply those?
So I seem to be knowing less as time goes on...

I'm looking for a rear replacement wheel for my 1997 Turbo S. I believe the part number is 993.362.140.00. I believe the 18 inch twisted hallow wheel comes in a slightly different color than from the regular Turbo, C4S, and C2S. Please let me know if anybody has an idea where I might find one.

I believe the wheels arte the same as the non-s wheels only with a different finish. Why not buy a non-S wheel and have it re-finished? Do you still have the center cap from the S? If so, that would probably be your cheapest alternative. I see a lot of them on ebay or you could go to wheel enhancement or somewhere like that.
I have a spare set of S wheels with caps, but would only sell them for a lot of money (10k or something).

Turbo S rear wheels are still available from Porsche at just over $1K a pop 99336298005 they are painted and laquered though and not the original ali fleck electrostatic wizardry finish.
Standard turbo rear wheels are NLA

Can anyone confirm that all US market Turbo S cars came with the ion vapor deposit technology wheels or was this not a consistent feature? I'm looking at a 1997 Turbo S and it has standard silver paint 993.362.136.00 and 993.362.140.00 and I'd like to know if these are original to the car.

Thanks. I was looking in the 1997 dealer order guide and while it mentions the new 'Turbo S' center caps it didn't mention anything different regarding the wheels even though we know there was a difference.
Oddly, it mentions that the 'Turbo S' script on the engine cover is now 'Titanium Color'

SO I finally broke down after 7 years of tires, and I decided I would put the car on jack stands and have the wheels straightened refinished properly. After all I live in Los Angeles and the roads are horrible. Even though the tires had plenty of tread, I do enjoy driving the car, and it's a cheap insurance policy. Getting the original finish for the wheels isn't easy. It is a process of about 6 or more steps with different coats and finishes. I will keep you guys posted.

So far so good. I went to Custom Wheel refinishing in North Hollywood as they were referred to me by Wheel Enhancements in Los Angeles. 3 of the 4 rims were bent- shocking not all 4 were bent living in Los Angeles. The work so far has been incredible. There are 3 coats of paint on the wheels at the moment and then the "hyper coat" will be applied for that "shiny/anodized" finish. Will keep you posted. Then gonna slap some Michelin Pilots on and drive the heck out of her.
