I would be careful to differentiate between not driving fast and not wanting power. I rarely hit three-digit speeds in my twin turbo, but it sure is fun getting up to the legal speed limit in the blink of an eye . . . literally!

There is a huge safety factor in having the power of the 993TT (or even better with a Ruf Turbo R)... safe freeway merges. I figure that if I can enter the freeway at 140 or so, I will rarely get rear-ended. I haven't yet had to explain this logic to the highway patrol, but I'm quite sure they would agree. )

Quad is quite right on this. I would guess that your O2 sensors need replacement or perhaps you are using spark plugs that are too cold?

Turbos work great even when just loafing along.

Good read, this thread.

I'm looking at a couple 993 TTs and a couple C4Ss.

I currently have an Audi TT RS and previously had a Cayman S which is to say I appreciate both the turbo and the NA driving experiences.

I like the idea of the 993 TT, especially after reading this thread, but I'm thinking the C4S is the le$$ risky way to go.

How valid is this thought?

There is risk is any used car. If you are talking about mechanical risk, both cars side by side with the same mileage and driven exactly the same way, the turbo might be a bit riskier just because it has more systems to contend with. That being said, its also heavier built to take the power (better engine internals, head design, heavier clutch, upsized transmission, heavier driveshafts, etc.), so if that factors in longevity, the Turbo is ahead.

The achilles heel of the Turbo is the turbo's themselves, they do run hot and can have issues. With good oil (V-twin) and proper cool down procedures, its minimized any issues.

Its all a crap shoot anyways. You buy a car, do the PPI, and there is still no guarantees -> just indicators that things are good/bad. A low mileage well kept Turbo is less risky than a higher mileage C4S that has had the crap driven out it.

What does your heart tell you? This is more of an emotional decision than you think.

Cheers,

Mike

One of the best-kept secrets in Porscheville is how reliable the 993TT is. It really isn't any more risky or maintenance-prone than a non-turbo car. As Mike J points out, the turbo units themselves need to be cooled and cared for. If they need a rebuild, there could be a ~$2000 expense. This is counterbalanced by the fact that the turbo cars rarely have problems with the SAI systems as the NA cars do. But... shhhhhh. don't let anybody know about this secret.

Yeah, I agree. The cars are very strong internally. I am not sure about the SAI, it does seem to be true that Turbos have less issues, but as a group they seem to have much less mileage as well. I think we would need more data to confirm if that is really a confirmed fact, but I am willing to go with it!

Cheers,

Mike

Not to mention the overall # of turbos are just less. So smaller sample size etc etc
