For those of you with both, or experience with both;

why are "S" 2-3 X more money?

Sorry if my question is manifestly stupid, but I'm curious...

ive owned the non-S and S of both the 964s and 993s.
no question, hands down, the 964 was my favorite. more brutally raw and more electric than a 993. the 993 was a big step up in innovation, the power in a few of the gears is outstanding. the pedal feel and clutch feel more modern and assister in the 993s. but from a noise, grunt, brutal attack on your senses perspective, the 964s were better.

the S-s are just collectible as hell. some of th ebest investment pieces you could consider. problem is, it also makes them more difficul tto drive hard and fully. a 993TS w 5k miles might be 150,160k while a non-S is 70k. if you are looking at them for collectability , S's are cool. if you're talknig about a car you really want to, and will drive...go with non-S.

Sloan has some cars, they are usually all consignment cars so you have to be , imho, more concerned with their quality etc. ...but he has good stuff.
call Ray @ RPM sports cars. ive worked with him a bunch also. his stuff is a bit more impeccable as he owns all his inventory. he doesnt buy storied or problem cars.
Wilhoit is another.

and then just scour these boards. there are some well known RLmembers who sell their prizes 993 and964s from time to time.

Lets start with the S. From a driving standpoint, the 24 extra hp is not mindblowing. If you're buying it to drive and not stick it in the garage and hope it appreciates, forget the S. They are way overpriced for the driving enjoyment you're gonna get, imo.

964 vs 993 is a tough one. First question has go to be which you prefer looks wise. i think they are both awesome. 2nd is whether you enjoy having awd (although its pretty easy to ditch on the 993). Third is whether you prefer a smoother driving experience or the more raw 964 (from my experience, it isn't ALL that different. 964 clutch is heavier by a lot).

The 993 is faster, imho handles better, and is more stable. Not being able to easily kick the rear out is a bit of a bummer though.

I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I preferred the 993

Well gentlemen, I really think the early AWD systems feel very heavy. Hell, I don't even like the 997.2 AWD.

Glad to hear I can disconnect the 993.

Guess I would have to find someone with both and drive each. They are both breathtakingly PORSCHE. 991... not so much. Even my 997 GTS is a GT car already, not a sportscar.

another advantage to the 993 to me is maintenance. The 993 fuel injection is, to me, much easier to deal with than the CIS on the 965. Also, there are no valve adjustments on the 993tt.

964 much more raw and more inline with the original!

993 more power , more controlled , more refined and safer!

allegretto, you have had just about all the worthwhile modern p cars.
if i were you, i would do 964 flaubach with 993S close behind.
why bother with others.
spg993tt has had a boat load of 964 slant noses. ask him.

good recommendation. for collectibility i'd go with the 964 flachbau then 993 Turbo S, as recommended by Mooty. however, if you're not in the US and have access to a 993 GT2 then that would be on top of my list.

if you are going to use the car all the time, i think the 993 Turbo is the best of the aircooled engines. it's just so smooth and effort free to drive. you can use it all the time, be comfortable, and enjoy the fact that you're in an aircooled porsche.

i've driven the 964 Turbo and i feel it's the compromise between the 930T and 993TT in terms of raw old world feel and modern day comfort. personally (and my intention in the near future), you need to have a 930T and 993TT and simply get the best of both worlds

The 993tt is closer to the 996/997tt in feel, the 964...or even a 930 is an animal, no nannies whatsoever!
Do what I did, a slant!
On the weekends, I always reach for the slant keys, an adrenaline rush!

closer to a 996/997tt? marginally

The 993 has abd, thats about it. Ive seen it come on once on my car...in gravel.

The 930 has a ****ty powerband. While it may be thrilling, its also pretty much useless.

The 993, imho, takes whats good about the 930/964 (the size, the aircooled engine, the solid construction, etc.) and leaves the peaky powerband, antiquated suspension, and 5 speed gearbox.

while i agree, i must say there is something nostalgic about driving the 930 that will simply put a smile on your face especially if you want to cruise around on a sunday morning.

i will say though, that my friend's dad has a 965 and a 993TT and the likes the older one better. i wonder if that will change when he gets his 89 930 slantnose in the near future.

different strokes for different folks so it will be best that you go on a test drive yourself.
