Default FDM Sport Cats...installed, impressions

I'm pretty sure this is going to be my next mod.

1. Does anyone have these? If so, can you comment on the sound and any performance gain?

2. Install? Any gotchas? I'm really only concerned about the bolts that connect to the turbos. They tend to get a bit stuck.

Thanks all.

Also, does the rear bumper need to come off for this?

Oliver.... Thanks for doing this. As usual, you and I are neck to neck with these mods.

Hi Oliver and Chuck... This is also on my list. I believe the rear bumper does need to come off to get the cats out of the car. I may be wrong, but if anything it will be a lot easier to see everything while you're doing it. The rear bumpers are easy to remove. I plan on doing this mod to my car next winter when the car is in storage. As for the nuts/bolts. When I switched out my turbos last winter the nuts came off fine. I did replace all of them with new ones when the car went back together.

if you guys are interested, I'll do a DIY with pictures.

You can do this with the bumper cover on if you want to make life very complicated. Any hardware holding the turbos to the car or exhaust to the turbos are sure to give you problems. You might as well go ahead and order new hardware now, because even if it does come off - re-using it is probably not in your best interests. When re-installing it seems to be industry standard to use copper paste on the hardware for easier removal next time. I have no idea whether this actually makes anything easier for next time.

I received a set of FD Motorsports cats (actually they modified a spare set that I had) for my birthday last year. (Thanks, Sweetie!) Unfortunately, they sat for a while while I was working on other projects and then I had a turbo "go south" so I am waiting to get the rebuilt turbos on the car before I install the new cats.

That said, the turbos should be going on this week, so the cats will follow. I should have the car running in the next week or so and can provide an impression - the only problem is that the car has been laid up for 8+ weeks waiting for the turbos, so I don't have a nice recent comparator of sound/performance in my head/bones to judge by. Even so, I'll post once I get the car back on the road.

Dave, what makes it so difficult with the bumper on.

I believe access to the exhaust pipe/turbo retaining bolts is not too difficult, bumper on?

I'm not sure what else the cat pipes attach to.

any insight here would be great.

The bumper cover has just been resprayed so I'd prefer not to tamper with it too much if I can help it.

Carson, any insight you can provide on your sound/performance and everything else would be appreciated.

While it has been popular to upgrade to 200 cell units vs the stock cats.

It is a wise suggestion to look at the actual cell structure and material. There is a difference between aftermarket Asian manufactured 200 cell ceramic or metalic cores vs the 100 cell High Flow Metal cats manufactued in Germany.

Put another way, why does one need 200 cell units when you can benifit from genuine 100 cell units that many Euro tuners use. I have never had a 100 cell CEL failure from the larger 100 cell units. The benifit is usually 6 to 8 PSI of reduced back-pressure.

Another strong design engineered into the German cats is the reinforced metal structure. Imagine thru bolts being passed thru the structure of the cell to keep the cartridge contained under high temperature and loads.

I'll dig up some pictures showing the cartridge differences between most 200 Cell units and the German 100 cell units. Again if one is going to meet the OBD2 standards, one will have to increase the diameter of the cell cartridge to create enough surface area to allow the CAT's to work.

Mark from fdm might be able to address those points.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I sell Genuine 100 cell Cat system.

If you use a search function you will see many of my Ultimate Motorwerks customers (with video)running these very same units on the track or street.

Kevin, do you simply place the 100 cells into the stock pipes?

Can you PM pricing?

Thanks.

I don't have any data/can't share any impressions with respect to just changing the cats since the upgrade was done as a kit.

different question. Can you swap 02 sensors without pulling the bumper? I haven't looked at their location.
