Default Daytime Running Lights

Does anyone know the process for converting an American car to having daytime running lights for use in Canada? Are any parts required or is there simply a change in the wiring? Thanks in advance. - Glenn

In Canada, my understanding is that if your car didn't come with daytime running lights as standard in year of manufacture, then there's no need to add it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

However, if its a safety concern, its just pretty easy to just turn the lights on as you start the engine.

You can do a simple relay to turn the lights on with the key in the run position.

Daytime running lights are required for our cars in Canada to pass inspection. The dealer did mine, I understood it's just a simple relay in the fuse box to turn on/keep the driving lights on (but don't know the specifics). If you post in the Rennlist Canada forum, I'm sure the guys would know.

"CMVSS 108 requires daytime running lamps on all vehicles made since 1 January 1990"

And this brochure indicates DRL required for cars manufactured after November 1989.

But if DRL is a must regardless:

Glenn,
looks like LATs writeup should work. when I got my car, I found that the relay spot on Cdn cars is not wired up to anything. so must be wired up. at the time I was told that you must run separate wiring to the lights, or driving lights. I think that is what Mantis does.
did you buy a car?

it is a requirement for importing a car to Canada regardless of age.

can't believe its a law to make cars that did not come with daytime running light have them. that is an injustice.

Porsche went backwards on this one. The 964 was ready - all you needed to do was buy a relay ($20?) and plug it into the already existing and wired socket in the box under the hood and presto, instant DLR's.

Thanks for the info guys. I will pass it on to my mechanic. Dan, I haven't bought a car yet but I am working on it for sure.
