Default 993 TT oil recommendation?

So, I've spent a few hours reading all the oil threads I can find in the air cooled section of this site.

Seems that Brad Penn 20w-50 is the stuff for the older 911 and the NA 993s.

However, for the 993tt, which has those lovely hot turbos, is a dino oil sufficient?

I didn't get a straight answer in this forum using the search function, but it seems people are sticking with M1 15w-50 despite the alleged lack of ZDDP and other additives.

So, do I go with BP for the zddp but risk coking the turbos, or do I go M1 for its synthetic goodness but risk damaged valvetrain from lack of ZDDP?

thanks for any input, and sorry for another oil thread.

Mobil 1 15-50 for the turbos.

Someone (Steve W?) said that the Brad Penn is not adequate. <EDIT: It was not Steve W.>

RUF Dallas runs the Mobil 1 in my car. Works for me.

Steve W is the last person whom would say BP is inadequate for turbos (he might even chime in). As he would say he ran BP on all his old 800hp turbo race cars and never had any issues. Semi syn works great and your engine won't leak as bad

I've been running BP for two track seasons now and have nothing but good things to say. Blackstone oil analysis always comes back great and zero issues with the turbos

There is a reason why the 993TT came from the factory with a synthetic fill. The heat management is alot better vs a dino or semi-blend.

I would recommend the new Mobil 1 VTwin oil..

Do a search on the 996TT forum you will see a recent oil thread. It has a few good post to the Mobil website.

Kevin, thanks for the info, but I've read that the motorcycle oils lack the detergent qualities of a good automobile engine oil.

I've never seen so much controversy over oil!

any other input is great.

Go to the Mobil 1 website and search there Q @ A.. You will see this very same topic. The VTwin oil is very good. It does have additives FOR the aluminum components. The VTwin oil is designed for a 4 stroke, big bore air-cooled engine.

I'd run the Mobil 1 VTwin oil over Brad Penn in the 993TT engine.

ok, definitely something to look at.

Do you have a preferred weight?

how about this crazy idea:

6 quarts 0w-40
4 quarts of 15w-50
Any top offs would be in 15w-50

You get some decent cold weather flow, with pretty good hi temp protection

Thoughts?

I've been using 10-w50 Total (formerly Elf) and like it. Just a bit thinner for cold starts

LOL -- dont take me too seriously, I have trouble doing so myself!!

All I know is that I am hesitant to make changes in lubricants and perhaps someday I should, but at the moment I stay close to the M1 brand in 15w50 weight.

Is there any concern over oils (reformulated oils, from the original '96/'97 formulas) not having Zinc in them like they use to (for metal on metal wear)?

My shop recommends Swepco 306 for that reason.

Folks here is some good reading material.. I strongly recommend the Mobil VTwin 20W50 for our Turbocharged 993TT engines.

https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...Race_Cars.aspx

https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...t_Engines.aspx

This is a good thread for those that have mechanics that recommend "other oils" over Mobil 1

https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...il_Claims.aspx

If you need to spend $300.00 on oil and want to fill good. Order in some Motul 300V..

Kevin is right. Mobil 1 M/C oil is the ticket! I run 10-40 M1 M/C oil in my turbo NSX. Great stuff with all the zinc, phosphorus, and detergents in it.
